jennyjaon - "Jeepers - definitely not - what about the like of myself who completely depended on lip-reading right through all of my school years."

Are you profoundly deaf?

Your post certainly adds more weight to the 'no veil' argument than any others.
no, if you are the back of the classroom you need facial expressions and lip reading to assist hearing, the physical veil in front of the face would also muffle the voice making it harder to understand
No veil or anything else covering the face.
Rather ironic that a British person would wish to remove part of the fabric which makes Britishness what it is when, at the same time, someone whose parents originated in the Middle East wants to enshrine a 'British Bill of Rights' into law, to ensure that the Britishness can continue!
Absolutely not. We all read faces not black blobs.

I am classed as profoundly deaf in one ear and the other is a bit better. Until digital hearing aids were produced at a reasonable price I relied on lip reading during conversations.

If anyone covered their lips (veil, niqab, scarf or hand) then I had problems unless they had a loud voice. The deafness started from when I was 12yrs old. My position in the classroom was always in the front row!
Thank you SlackAlice.
Always thought he was a bit of a nut case, now I know he is!
No I would not
Without even looking at other responses, my answer is 'No, I would not be at all happy.' Rowan Williams has always been a bit other-worldly to my mind.

but that's because he is a right-on sandal-wearing lentil-steamer,

Wow....mikey is bang on, the expanse of the far right is really getting out of hand.

Right wing?

ME???

Let me hold my sides, they may split!!!
Part of what we learn is how to understand and interpret facial expressions and emotions.

Do we ever look at people as they talk, and think ... I trust you, I believe you, I like you?

It's because hearing words can be bland and meaningless unless unless we use our lifetime's experience of reading the face that is speaking the words.

If we stop teaching our children to read faces, we will deprive them of an enormously important life skill.

On the other hand, I don't have children, and I'm not going to, so why should I give a rat's ar5e.

Because you live in a society peopled by other people's children, and you are not so self-centered as to exist in isolation, so i think you do care really.
andy ... yes, of course I care, really.
So the Welsh wind-bag has been at it again. He should go back to caring for his goats high up on Cadair Idris and well-distanced from making embarrassing statements that do him and the Church no credit at all. Hasn't changed when he was in officio, has he? 'Daft as a Brwsh'
Apart from communication, it has to be said that anyone who believes that women (but not men) have to conceal their faces from anyone who isn't their husband, a close family member or female friend

is not a good role model for any child
DTC...your comments are entirely out of order. His nationality has nothing whatsoever to do with this thread whatsoever. The bit about the goats is particularly childish.
Although, to be fair, he actually did used to keep goats.
mikey - he did more to destroy the Church of England than any other Archbishop in centuries. He was a dreadful leader. And he keeps goats.
