It is one MPs opinion. The Mail describes him as a prominant MP, but sadly, I have never heard of him. Though I do think there is some truth in the claim. The Westminster Elite is out of touch with working people. But the problem is in all the Parties, not just Labour.

Does he mean north of England? or northern UK? or both?
By that reckoning, only London cockneys sound intelligent?
^^ p.s. Morning Svejk by the way. How are you? xx

Lovely Jan. Hope you're well. x
Fine thanks Svejk. xx
Well that's okay then, UKip are trying to attract some Labour supporters over to their side, perhaps this slur might encourage them?
Wasn't that a State secret ?
Labour is meant to stand for strong community values, the working man - what a load of rubbish!!
I wonder what Dave thinks of people with Northern accents? It doesn't matter to me ' cus I sound like Lady Mary from Downton.
I respected his opinion......right up until I read he was a former president of the NUM.
and when you’ve got an accent like mine they think, “well that man doesn’t really know too much

Yeah, not as if one would be stupid enough to, say, announce something daft that might lose their party votes, or anything like that.

Maybe it's not the accent after all ?
How can anyone who supports a Wallace lookalike have the nerve to call anybody else stupid?
Tony's a bit of a loose cannon - he should shut up and retire to his very nicely feathered nest!

You will never believe this Svekj, up North we have Telephones, TVs, Car's, even roads with Tarmac that was laid with workers wearing Flat Caps, now beat that, lol
If such an opinion does exist within the upper echelons of the Labour Party, perhaps there is something in it. The people of the north are renowned for voting Labour.
I just wish they could pronounce the letter O properly.
I'm too thick to post on this thread.
I personally have heard very educated professors speaking in Durham Uni with local accents but they enunciate words and use educated language. Anyone can sound thick in speech or on paper. For me anyone saying things like 'we was' or 'she were' immediately gets put in the thick uneducated category regardless of accent.
I just wish they could pronounce the letter O properly.

Rediculous statement.
eh oop talbot!
they say "slooor" when then mean "slow" - that alone is criminal.
No they don't.

Nor do they say sore when they mean saw.
