Usual *** from the effofay above coupled with even more from the “lets find and alternative so we don’t need to have and opinion” mob. Packed lunch? If you like but irrelevant to this or are you saying let the effofay have their way because we can always have a packed lunch! What a cop out! As usual we are infiltrated by anti British handwringers who cannot help themselves pandering to Muslims, and don’t tell me cost is a factor pork is cheap as chips. Yes this is Knoo Laybore pandering to their core muslim vote. End of.
//Pork has been taken off menus at primary schools in a north London borough because it costs too much to monitor which children are allowed to eat it, a council has said.//
Not the cost of the aforementioned foodstuff.
I'll be the one to ask - what is 'effofay'?
Jackdaw sometimes the only way to get ones point across is to repeat it, nauseating or not.

name-calling again, TTT? Always the sign of a man winning an argument, of course.
Pork and lamb are way below chicken and beef in the UK, and are the obvious choices to drop when you're offering a limited menu.

I've deleted how I started this post. It is many years ago that Bradford council decreed that all school meals should be Halal - yes, we are back to that, I'm afraid. One lady who protested about her rates going towards the practice was gaoled because she withheld a proportion which she thought covered her donation to it. I had to forgo the 'payment' of a school dinner in exchange for dinner-duties (still did the duties, as did many). That's what this is all about. I think that Rotherham has also decided that all school meals should be halal.
It's all the wrong way around. Just eat veggie if the meat isn't to your taste or religion - there is always a veggie option. Sorry for outburst, it's something I get cross about.

Interesting. The article does mention that both Muslims and Jews are being taken into consideration, so I'm puzzled as to why the thread title focuses solely on Muslims. Even after auntie tweaked it? What was problematic about the original title (which I didn't get to see)?
"Islington is an ethnically diverse borough compared to the UK as a whole, but is not unusual within London. The largest ethnic groups after White British (48%) are White-Other (16%), Black African (6%) and Black Caribbean (4%)."

Forgot to add that Svejk's article mentions an issue of "food waste" and a desire to avoid this.
I take this to mean that the council's caterers are over-ordering and/or over-producing on the days when pork is on the menu. Staff effort is required to work out which kids to not serve to and leftovers have to be thrown away at the end of the day.
What is so hard about doing a pupil census once (repeat only when a new pupil joins or a new year intake)? If you know only 50/100 are okay to eat pork, then only order a maximum of 50 portions.
If you complicate things by giving them choice then you might get days where only 20 of the 50 want bangers so that's 30 portions thrown away because they fancied the alternative.
Try not giving them an alternative? (ie non-Halal pupils are not allowed to choose the halal menu item because there will be ony 50 of that, too).
This takes more words to describe than I'd like. I'd get my ideas across easier with diagrams. ;)

Hypognesis - it doesn't matter what the diversity is. No religion opposes a vegetarian option, therefore any menus can offer normal British food plus a veggie meal which should be acceptable to all. This is perfectly healthy and has been offered as long as I can remember. An old friend was i/c school meals in an area near me and that was what she worked on. I can't see a problem, to be honest, a veggie meal midday and feed meat if you wish in the evening. This does not impinge on other cultures who do not demand ritual slaughter.
