methyl - "I totally just don't believe that a young and fit girl cannot reject the unwanted advances an old bloke."
Then I suggest you have not considered how the world works for children and teenagers, as against the way it works for adults.
As an adult, you live and work on a level playing field with all other adults. No-one tells you what to do, no-one controls you, and no one has any power over your life and your behaviour.
But think about a child’s life. The routine of being controlled by adults, be they parents, teachers, or whomever, is as natural as breathing, because that is the way their world works.
To expect a child to confront confusing and frightening behaviour from a controlling adult and react to it with the maturity and presence of mind of an adult is simply unrealistic. Far more likely is a reaction where the child agrees with the adult that what is happening is OK, or to believe any coercion or threats that guarantee the child’s silence.
Childhood when manipulated by people like Harris becomes a terrifying, secretive, powerless place to be – never underestimate that.

Andy absolutely spot on. Harris first attacked her when she was 8 years old. Had that happened to me at her age I would have been frightened out of my wits and terrified of him for the rest of my life. My parents always taught to do as I was told by an adult and woe betide if I didn't.

"5. Count 1
5.1 This was on any view a truly appalling offence. An 8 year old child, a friend of your daughter, was an overnight guest in your home. You went to the room in which these two little girls were sleeping together in a double bed and you made a determined, although ultimately unsuccessful, attempt to rape her. You did so in the presence, sight and hearing of your own daughter. You caused that child deep harm which has persisted throughout her life. It is difficult to overstate the depravity of this dreadful behaviour."
