/// British values is not something that can be taught in school anyway. It should be something that is everywhere in this country and should be assimilated naturally. ///
And it can't be assimilated naturally, then like everything else it must be taught, hence the whole point of this thread.

nor on the playing fields of Eton ( Wellington 1815 )
British values are...
British values are
British values are , for chrissakes
( The verb agrees with the subject of the sentence in number )
Not something you learnt at skool fifty years ago either it seems
( schools they dont do much, do they ?)

So far only one person has really stood up for what British values are. Only really they are Western values, and the "freedom of thought" one by implication means that teaching them to children must at most recognise that they are up for debate!
Any more offerings?
The problem is that there must be an implication that not teaching British values means teaching non-British ones instead; I don't think this really follows, any more than just because the government introduces legislation on the thing doesn't mean it wasn't already largely happening anyway. At school (a relatively recent memory for me compared with most on this site, I expect) we were taught about respect and citizenship and democracy and quite a few other things that actually do come under what are probably "British" values. The difference was they weren't sold as particular to Britain, which is also, coincidentally, true.

ummmm
/// Then surely British values are taught at home. Like equal rights for
women! ///
Try telling that to some of our adopted citizens, yes I agree perhaps that is one item at least that could be taught, not only to their children but perhaps the Government should fund evening classes so as to teach their parents also.

// As a child of immigrant parents who happens ( snip ), I have no idea what British values are //
Oh I do - my parents values ( british raj and Boer ) are completely unsuitable for 2015. That was priddy obvious fifty years ago.
I watch a lot of progz where the likes of Anthony Blunt and George Blake or Kim Philby ( spies, what ) say things like " and I realised that the values espoused by the free dom seeking Russians under Stalin were much better than I was taught " and go 'yikes have you never heard of the gulags or forced collectivisation? '
