I saw this on the news yesterday but I hadn't realised that this little lad was only 7 years old. According to the news, he asked for permission to ski alone. How on earth did his parents allow him to go skiing alone, in such a dangerous place ? What on earth were they thinking of ?

Ummmm....we skied in Canada......it's not difficult to ski together and I can't think of a time I wouldn't have kept a child in my sights.

douglas...you are just being daft.
the same story as reported in France.
http://lci.tf1.fr/france/faits-divers/un-enfant-se-tuie-en-sautant-une-barre-rocheuse-a-flaine-8592927.html?xtmc=flaine&xtcr=1

here, there is no mention of his asking permission to ski alone - here, the mother was said to have stopped to help her daughter, who had fallen.

let's not judge before we know what happened, eh?
Difficult to comment on this without any real knowledge of the situation. My impression is that he was a smart kid and a competent skier on an easy, well-marked slope. If that's the case then this outcome was highly unlikely and the mother should be pitied (and helped), not castigated.
Mushroom...."let's not judge before we know what happened, eh?"

That would be nice, wouldn't it?
ummm

Nothing less than I would expect from this post. The usual suspects gobbing off, finger pointing and sitting in judgement BEFORE the FULL facts unfold. Some will never learn or listen. :-(
Just skim-read the French report and it does seem that there is a bit of a mystery here. It definitely states that the boy's sister fell and the mother was occupied with her. Then there is the bit that says his skis were at the top and he must have 'jumped' (climbed?) a barrier of some sort.
This is a very sad story, I don't know that the mother can be accused of neglect. A seven year old boy should not have been on his own, but we don't know the full facts.
Here is the DM's take on it which differs from the DT link I posted earlier and mushroom's link. So it isn't clear cut at all.

You're right mikey, just keeping it all at one level.
There is precious little information to be going on yet the Mother is being hung , drawn and quartered already.

I think 'jumping to conclusions' is the most exercise many minds on AB experience.......
I'm sure mikey means well and it is easy to get annoyed when tragic accidents happen.
He may have asked permission but was it given? It is easy to stay on piste with a modicum of experience but a 7 year old may be confused easily. We recently had a child fatality on the seacliffs (not the first by a long chalk) but here the parents had no clue about the real danger.
He was named in wolf63's link at 12.20 today Tony, you're a bit late.
Ah right, didn't see that ladybirder.
The family have just released a statement. His sister lost a ski, mum stopped to help her, boy didn't realise and carried skiing, getting separated from the from the family.

Now, can we take the noose for the mothers neck please.

"Innocent until proven guilty!"

Heck No, this is a Mikey thread!
Yes I've just been listening to this on the BBC News. Come on Mikey, I think an apology from you is due here.
//Now, can we take the noose for the mothers neck please. //

Well said Rocky. Tragic, just tragic.
