The Giraffe Picture
Can anyone help me understand why someone would do this?

I mean, it's not as if giraffe numbers need to be kept down, or there's a massive market for giraffe-skin trousers.
So..why?
At least with poaching there's a reason (ecomonics - sale of fur, rhino horns, ivory etc).
But giraffes???

I probably didn't make my comparison as clear as I could have - but I believe my point is valid.
Although - if the disgust is not so much at the fact that the woman shot the animal, than that she lay down to pose with it - that is not comparable, that is something unique to people who shoot animals for the fun of it.

Definitely the idiot at it's side Not the giraffe. I fail to see what the nationality of the killer has to do with the thread but it had to be brought up she is American
Only 2 days ago mikey's mates were raising holy stink because aog mentioned an Asian LABOUR councellor'son on his OP titles .What is the fact that he is LABOUR got to do with it they protested.
The fact was that aog correctly quoted several media links including the BBC that mentioned this councillor was LABOUR.
I see no relevance in this tragic thread that mikey needs to again display his predjudice against the Americans.

/// How did you come to that conclusion, AOG? ///
/// That's twice ( that i have noticed ) today that you have posed a question made a comment ; which indicates that you have not understood something someone has said or a news story ///
So as to answer these two posts, may I direct the two posters to what the OP chose to add in his original post, I place it below for your reference.

Now having read that are you both still confused?

This butcher is no hunter. A good hunter would not have been so smug if it was not a clean quick kill. I own 3 high powered long range rifles and belong to a H.O. approved rifle club. I,incidentally, have never shot a living breathing thing in my life. One of our club members is licenced to shoot game for FOOD. I saw him put 3 rounds of 7.62mm in an area of a 10p piece at 100yds only 2 weeks ago. He almost cried with relief when he realised he had not wounded an animal he was hunting a few weeks ago.

//I consider the condemning of this action hypocrisy and the people who do so just as bad as the culprit who committed it.//
No, it is not hypocrisy to criticise it. The manner of dispatch is the limit of the similarity.*
Livestock exist worldwide and have all become phenomenally successful species, in terms of number and variety but only thanks to the way we turned natural forests into pasture land, as well as shipping them to parts of the planet which they could not reach by themselves. Indeed they might still be as rare as giraffe if we hadn't developed the desire to eat them.
Other than in zoos, giraffe have limited areas suitable for them and circulating an image on social media, suggesting that they are legal to hunt cannot be a good thing. The backstory will get forgotten the more the pic is passed around.
* The story about providing food to the locals has the ring of 'plausible cover story'. Except how long does fresh meat keep at equatorial temperatures? And, if it was an old animal, wouldn't the meat be tough and unpalatable?
Lastly, not letting the scavenger animals get the benefit of the carcass means they were interfering with the whole local ecosystem, not just one animal which was happily minding its own business.
p.s. I suspect the 'lingering death' bs is just another post-hoc attempt at justifying the despicable interference with letting nature take its course.
A month or two ago, the same justification was applied to a 30+ year old black rhino. A "once in a lifetime opportunity" was given to a male tourist (again American, surprise, surprise) - for wads of cash, obviously.
I can see this trend continuing. It may well be raising funds to help wildlife preservation attempts but the ends doesn't necessitate that I have to like the means.
