The Giraffe Picture
Can anyone help me understand why someone would do this?

I mean, it's not as if giraffe numbers need to be kept down, or there's a massive market for giraffe-skin trousers.
So..why?
At least with poaching there's a reason (ecomonics - sale of fur, rhino horns, ivory etc).
But giraffes???

Sounds as if you show more support for those scum of the planet poachers who are killing on such a scale that certain African animals are almost extinct.
Although I don't like to see any animals being killed, some have to be for food or for humane reasons, as in this case apparently.

Her rationale is that the giraffe was going to die soon anyway, and she prevented a lingering slow death, and provided the local populace with meat and the means to make artefacts, I assume for sale.
I think hunters hunt because they can - they have a very different mind set from most people, and they view animals very differently.
This approach has its paralells in farmers and country people who regard animals as either working tools, or provision of profit and an income.
It's impossible for one to inhabit the mind of the other, so looking for a rational explanation is never going to work.

Hunters hunt because they can – farmers farm for a reason. No parallel there.

No worse than what is happening across slaughter houses though out the UK. Why get so hung up on an animal that has been killed purely because it is a little more rare and aesthetically pleasing? I consider the condemning of this action hypocrisy and the people who do so just as bad as the culprit who committed it.
Far from it Naomi. Millions of Americans hunt every year. They shoot anything that moves, as andy has said...because they can. They wiped out the worlds supply of Passenger Pigeons in just over 100 years. They are gun crazy as can be seen from the 10,000's of deaths and injuries due to hunting every year, not to mention all the innocent little children, shot in their classrooms.
I would mind betting that this giraffe killing would barely have mentioned a word in the US media, if Gervais hadn't stepped in.
