all very laudable, but companies are in business to make money, not to fill diversity quotas. so their CEOs will always be the very best the companies can afford, and not one who'll make the company look good politically. just wondering how labour can expect to make this work?

I don’t imagine that shareholders will be too delighted to find that the return on their investment is going to be influenced by potty political correctness. Labour doesn’t understand business. That’s why they’re not very good at balancing the books.
The quotas have to be filled mushroom, it's the same with minority/ethnic or disabled people and actors finding work in TV and the workplace. Without meaning to condescend companies have to offer places for them. In the workplace naturally you will find most very good intelligent workers, there have also been some really bad ones too. Some who didn't know how to address an envelope or write an internal memo or speak passable English. Pull up the bad ones and they will cite the 'ism', that is when the difficulties arise.
but AYG, CEOs are "the cream" and statistics are rather against minority candidates when the labour party are looking to a quota of 25% ethnic directors. at the last census, 87% of the population said they were white British. of the remaining 13% how many are likely to be of the sort of calibre as the CEO of Credit Suisse (so far the only black UK director of a leading company)?
their last target of 25% women directors was a bit more realistic, since 50% (ish) of the population are female, and indeed business has got close to that target with 22%. but 25% ethnic directors? without positive discrimination bing imposed, it's hard to see how it can be achieved.
oh and mohamed al-fayed doesn't count - he owns the place and didn't have to prove he was CEO material.

How many directors went to a private school rather than a state school. I think that is more the question than what colour their skin is.
Not sure of the exact % but at least 95% of people attended state schools so by the same logic 95% of directors should be ex state school. As should 95% of MPs and ministers. Is that the case ??

Once you embark on positive discrimination to fill quotas then there will always be the suspicion that someone has got the job because of their colour/gender/sexual orientation rather than their abilities. Which causes resentment and disrespect among colleagues. That's why it never works and is a bad idea.
It's not a matter of filling diversity quotas, else everyone who isn't white British would be included, Eastern Europeans, Chinese, Japanese etc, etc.
No it is simply a 'Black' issue, why are they so hung up about the colour of their skin, I wonder if there is a cry in mainly black countries for more white's to be included in various positions?
