/// The mother wanted a memorial and there is one in her home town. ///

That is not on the spot where he was butchered, on your reasoning perhaps it would have also been in order just to erect a memorial to Stephen Lawrence in his mother's home town, all the way over in far off Jamaica?

/// Whilst a memorial's purpose is to remind us of a person or event there is little chance the Lee Rigby's name will ever be forgotten. ///

Whereas WPC Yvonee Fletcher's name may be forgotten, there is very little chance Stephen Lawrence's name will be.

So I ask again why the difference?

/// It was a heinous and terrible crime but sadly the fact is he was targeted specifically because he was a soldier rather than any random civilian who just happened to be a soldier. ///

And wasn't WPC Yvonne Fletcher targeted because she was a policewoman?

And wasn't Stephen Lawrence targeted because he was black?
Why the difference? I don't know AOG but the 3 cases are not the same. I haven't checked but my understanding is that Yvonne Fletcher was caught in crossfire rather than selected at a one-off incident, Stephen Lawrence was picked on by a small group of racist thugs. Lee Rigby was picked because he was a soldier by extremists who support a terrorist group that are currently active and causing hell all over the world ie it's very much current and unresolved. Maybe the authorities don't want to incite further incident in their backyard.
To Lady J, no he was neither armed nor in uniform but they knew he was a soldier.
Is it really necessary or warranted for a memorial to be erected for everyone who dies in an inauspicious manner?
Question Author
Those savages couldn't have known for certain that he was a soldier, he was murdered because he happened to be wearing a Help For Heroes T-shirt.

When one sets a certain precedent, then yes in similar circumstances?
Well they didn't strike me as the brightest of sparks but they thought he was a soldier, it was the location and haircut, not just the t-shirt. Their purpose was to kill a British soldier. Had they made a mistake I doubt it would have bothered them,
The Daily Mail have managed to move Middleton, Lancashire into Cheshire.
Then perhaps the precedent should not have been set in the first place. Please don't misunderstand me: I am not making light of these murders.
//an inauspicious manner?//

An understatement to say the least. This man was slaughtered - butchered - in cold blood on the streets of London by people who are sworn enemies of this country. His needless death at the very least warrants the construction of a memorial in Woolwich without reference to religious leaders and without concession to criticism or to the threat of reprisal.

If a memorial is indeed being contemplated, I have absolutely no idea why religious "leaders" should be consulted.

/// Then perhaps the precedent should not have been set in the first place. ///

Yes maybe, but that is the whole point of my thread it has been set, so why not a memorial to Lee?

/// Please don't misunderstand me: I am not making light of these
murders. ///

No I understand that you are not making light of these killings.

You know that some do not wish to offend, well offend certain groups that is.
I wonder if the Ottoman religious leaders were consulted prior to T.E. Lawrence's bust was placed in St. Paul's.
Question Author
Yes most funny this offending business, during WW2 we blamed the 'Germans' but now it is the 'Nazis', as if they were a whole new nation instead of a political party.
That has always puzzled me also.

If Lee Rigby's mother perseveres and campaigns and campaigns and campaigns and manages to collect a gathering of supporters. She might be considered such a pain in the proverbial to the establishment that her wish for a memorial is granted and who knows. She might even have a
Damehood bestowed on her though it should not be necessary to go that far.
//I have absolutely no idea why religious "leaders" should be consulted.//

Because the impetus for this slaughter was founded upon the tenets of Islam. Lee Rigby was butchered in the name of Allah.
ANOTHEOLDGIT, the mother said, 'I wanted to honour my and love my son but the only place I could lay my love was on the side of a road. It was devastating,' She has a memorial as pictured in your link and it appears to be a fitting tribute to him. The fact that it is in her home town does not detract from any meaning associated with it.
