Case of the bleeding obvious to me. Why didn't we do this earlier ?

If just amazes me how selfish smokers are. Even with overwealming evidence some above insist it's rubbish and presumably continue to gas their own kids at home. If it was left to smokers to put their own house in order we'd still have 70% smokers but they'd love that. They like nothing more than to justify their foul disgusting habit. Society had to do something...

I don't think anyone is doubting the links between smoking and health. You have waivered from your first point. Children's health may well have improved because of the fact that there are way less smokers around, most know not to do it in the home but I don't accept that it has anything to do with the ban.
Most people who've given up is down to health awareness and price - not because they can't smoke in the pub anymore.

Umm...then we agree on one thing at least then ! Who would go back to those days where everything stunk of cigarettes !
My Mum and Dad were also Publicans and I can remember the stink of their clothes when they came home from work every day. Dad would always leave his cardigan hanging over a chair in the dining room and us kids used to turf it out into the kitchen with a stick, just so that we could have breakfast !

Society had to do something and thankfully it has. No form of opression is to great for smokers, the sooner it is driven from civilisation the better.
ummmm:"I don't think I ever noticed the smell. " - no really! if you could smell youself how a non smoker smells you, you may consider stopping. I can smell a smoker 10 feet away.
"I think Naomi's comment is relevant. People harp on about the effects of smoking while shoving cream cakes down their necks or knocking back booze on a daily basis." - yes but do they go around pouring Stella down your throat by force or force feeding you Eclairs? Not remotely comparable.
Typical smoker must justify the habit.

If there was a noticeable drop of 3.5% in cases almost immediately after the ban was brought in (and this drop is confirmed at 95% confidence) it's hard to see how you can say that there wasn't a link. Possibly it's only a semi-direct one -- take away popular haunts for smokers and they are more likely to consider quitting, thus protecting their children from the effects of passive smoking.
Incidentally this study considers data between the years 2001 and 2012, and the smoking ban was introduced only in 2007 -- so that also gives six years of data sample before the ban, and so also a chance to assess with high levels of confidence any underlying trends towards better health. And with a sample of over 1.6 million that's quite a lot of data. No poll of just a thousand people, this.

I meant as a child, TTT.
I can certainly smell it now.
I'm not, and never will, try and justify the habit. Smoking is not cool and smokers are daft to start but its still an addiction and people need will power to stop.
I don't know any smokers that wouldn't stop instantly if they were given a tablet to make them do so.
Personally I'd rather poor my aggressive disgust at drink drivers and speeders.....

I wonder what effect on hospital admissions there would be if they banned diesel vehicles?

If the powers that be actually think I am stupid enough to believe this ridiculous lie then they will be sadly mistaken.
Lie after lie after lie. It is like the old kids story about the Emporers New Clothes.
In order not to look like they are out of touch or because the majority of people are like sheep and follow the herd they all agreed that the New clothes looked fantastic ( even though he was not actually wearing any ). Well thankfully there are still individuals who can see through this stupid 'Smoke' screen and can see that this is all just a small part of the governments plans to completely control the population via all social and media networks available, including radio, tv, internet, CCTV, etc. Social control is the Tories main pleasure in life. They are not called 'The Nasty Party' for nothing.
