/// Why is he doing this now? Surely he can't imagine that his career can be resurrected after all this time? ///
/// Even entertainers with an utterly baffling level of popularity and success which Barrymore achieved have a shelf life, and his has seriously expired. ///
I disagree Andy, even celebrities with a much more checkered history than his are still very popular, after all he wasn't convicted of anything.
He was a great and talented entertainer, who simply oozed with charm and charisma, and lets face it there are very few like that now. //
We will have to agree to disagree vis a vis the levels of Mr Barrymore's charm and talent - my view is the polar opposite of yours.
However, be that as it may, I appreciate that entertainers can maintain a successful career in spite of a scandal, or more than one, but few return to favour once their career has nosedived as comprehensively as has Mr Barrymore's.
I think his failed attempted comebacks prove that his television career ship has well and truly sailed.
Even allowing for his vast popularity in the day (and my opinion notwithstanding, he did enjoy a massive level of success and fame) I believe that his particular type of entertainment is not what the public today would want or appreciate.

Once again we must agree to disagree, take present day game-shows, can you name one that comes up to Barrymore's standard and such shows as 'My Kind of People' which got to the ordinary people.
I also think he would inject much more humour and interest into chat shows, look who we have now, but Graham Norton and Alan Carr?
And what about him being the host of Sunday night at the Palladium, or even the Royal Variety who have we now?

I take your point, but I do feel that a show of that type may well be past its sell-by date, but honestly, I cannot comment from a position of strength because I do not watch this type of show, so I have no real yardstick for what may or may not appeal to modern audiences.
// I also think he would inject much more humour and interest into chat shows, look who we have now, but Graham Norton and Alan Carr? //
Although I find Messrs Norton and Carr to be 'novelty' interviewers, and neither of them in the least appealing, I wonder if Mr Barrymore would be even keener on the limelight than these two - difficult though that would be!
// And what about him being the host of Sunday night at the Palladium, or even the Royal Variety who have we now? //
I refer you to my previous observations regarding light entertainment, it is not something I ever watch, so I cannot offer a reasoned opinion.
My belief is that Mr Barrymore is persona non grata with the public as much as he is with television commissioning editors, and his days in the sun are long gone.

divebuddy - I am inclined to agree.
Living a louche lifestyle in private is the prerogative of all of us, paupers to kings, but when the public become aware by virtue of an unexplained death, than that tends to be the career poison from which there is no way back.
Mr Barrymore has hardly covered himself in glory in the intervening time, rather underlining his unsuitability for a fat tv contract and a high-profile celebrity show.
