The question could equally be - should any Charity or organisation be able to lobby Government for funding, of course they should have that right.

The money sadly cannot help all such organisations and decisions have to made.

Education and awareness is probably a long way off achieving a resolution in this instance sad to say.

/// I think the majority living in the West are far more enlightened - well, about some issues anyway! ///

Perhaps it is not the 'majority' that we should be concerned about?
Fears "backlash"?
Lots of people would pay good money for that.
AOG - "Perhaps it is not the 'majority' that we should be concerned about?"

Absolutely - no argument here about that.

AOG - /// If you moved to Brixton, would you 'pretend to be black' if you encountered predjudice from your neighbours? ///

It might be safer. :0)

Steady on!!! LOL!

I have stayed in Brixton felt comfortable there and never felt the need to pretend to be black.
TELL YOU WHO IS GAY ?

Give us a kiss and I'll tell you ? lol !
If I moved to Brixton(7 mls) down the road that would mean I would have to integrate with an alien culture different to my own. Heaven forbid.
Talbot - "I have stayed in Brixton felt comfortable there and never felt the need to pretend to be black."

My comparison was tongue-in-cheek, in an attempt to puncture your assertion that gay people should 'pretend to be straight' in order to avoid any hostility.

It appears to have missed its mark, so ...

was your observation that gay people should pretend to be straight to 'blend in' actually serious?
"In an ideal world, this gentleman should be able to walk down his own street in full drag singing 'I Am What I Am' at the top of his voice, but we must accept that this is far from an ideal world, and a degree of compromise has to be entered into in the interests of personal safety."
Personal safety? I thought Islam was a religion of peace. I thought the majority of Muslims were tolerant, easy-going people who embrace "British" values. You're not suggesting otherwise are you, Andy?
Stupid me! Rape and queer-bashing are wrong, but offending Muslims is worse.
Must go back to the PC awareness course for further training.
andy, I have noticed that you do not have much of an ability to remember fellow posters general views on subjects...this is where the confusion lies.
vetuste - "I thought Islam was a religion of peace. I thought the majority of Muslims were tolerant, easy-going people who embrace "British" values. You're not suggesting otherwise are you, Andy? "

No I am not suggesting it.

I am stating it as a fact.

Any section of any society has its intolerant members who believe that others are not toeing the party line, and that applies to all sorts of cultural areas - religion, race, football, music, sexual orientation, the list goes on and on.

It would be naiive to assume that all Muslims are peace-loving tolerant people, just as it would be naiive to assume that all Christians are, or gays, or Chelsea fans, or Beyoncé fans.

But a nasty minority should never be held up as an example of the attitudes and behaviours of the majority. That way lies bigotry and hatred, and we should stamp it out wherever and whenever we find it.
Talbot - "andy, I have noticed that you do not have much of an ability to remember fellow posters general views on subjects...this is where the confusion lies."

Personally I am aware of your views, but for the benefit of those who have not followed your thoughts on AB, or newer members who know neither of us, a little reminder here and there helps the debate along.
vetuste - "Rape and queer-bashing are wrong, but offending Muslims is worse."

Can't agree with you there - offence is verbal, the other two are physical and therefore must be worse.
andy-hughes, //But a nasty minority should never be held up as an example of the attitudes … of the majority. That way lies bigotry and hatred, and we should stamp it out wherever and whenever we find it. //

That wrongly assumes that anti-gay attitudes aren't held by the majority of Muslims.
Naomi - "That wrongly assumes that anti-gay attitudes aren't held by the majority of Muslims."

Not having the advantage of the input from the majority of Muslims on that question, I can't really say either way.
andy-hughes, but you have said. You've said that only the nasty minority hold such attitudes.
Here's a clue for you, Andy. In a gallup poll of 500 muslims not one considered homosexuality acceptable.
I know polls have taken a knock lately but that seems pretty comprehensive.
Svejk - "Here's a clue for you, Andy. In a gallup poll of 500 muslims not one considered homosexuality acceptable.

If I took a poll of 500 Muslims in the montains of Afghanistan, I bet I could come up with a majority that think that white western men over the age of eighteen should be tortured off the face of the earth - doesn't make it a valid cross-section of the Muslim faith and their views though, does it?

Context is everything, and polls are really not that good a measure of anything important - like election results for instance!
