Being dictated to by an elite outside our national boundaries is simply not acceptable. It was one thing to establish standards and simplify exports/imports, but anything beyond that is questionable. And the idea we are all the same place, which is what the EU seems to be about, never agreed to here.
It will certainly be high on the list.
Of course the cause of those massing in Calais attempting to eneter the UK is not the fault of the EU as such. But its rules certainly facilitate that massing (hope that's OK to use) because the free movement of people throughout mainland Europe, made even easier by the Schengen Agreement means that the invaders are not contained and processed at their points of entry. I actually believe that if the UK left the EU the problem would not disappear. But the EU is intent on finding an "EU solution" to the problem which essentially means spreading the invaders across the Union when they should be concentrating on keeping them out. A "Brexit" would see us freed from any participation in that ridiculous idea. But it would probably have a severe downside in that I imagine the French will withdraw from the "Le Touquet" agreement which sees the UK border being policed in French ports. Then we really would have to strengthen our efforts in the home ports and return forthwith to their last known port of call any clandestines that make it here.

mikey;//By the way, where is Nigel these days ?//
Errr... as the OP says, he's in todays Telegraph! He must be correct in that everyone I talk to seems to be rather obsessed with illegal immigration, and it has been reported in the local press that even the German administration is now talking about a review of Schengen.
I personally thing that the EU should issue an official state of emergency.

Well, effectively, France has called for Schengen to be suspended, at least temprarily, or that's what I've understood from the Sarkozy camp. (I may have missed a chunk - birthday weekend at York races with daughters.) I heard this evening on R4 that Germany is also making noises about re-instating borders. This is not before time I.M.O..
If we get our border put back to Dover etc. - then so be it, that's fine. It will take a bit longer to get off the ferries or trains, that's all. Then we need to nerve to ship 'illegals' back to where they came from.
I think that immigration has made people think seriously (possibly for the first time) about what being in the EU means, so in that sense it may very well be the defining issue.

Quite right. Our lefty contingent on AB will try to convince that the UK is not pulling our weight. We are told that the rest of Europe are taking in more immigrants than we are. They tell us that the rest of Europe are happy to embrace immigrants and we should do likewise.
Total tosh. The French,German,Swiss,Swedish,Danish,French indigenous population are all up in arms over this. The left will just shrug it off as neo nazi right wing fanaticism. It damn well isn't and the rest of Europe are now smelling the coffee.
There will be rivers of blood flowing in the Rhine,Rhone etc as well as the streets in the near future. I recall the immigrant hostels torched about 30yrs ago in Germany when Turks flooded the building industry. This is history about to repeat itself.
