Not bad, but I still favour Thai jails for our scum.

Or if you want to eb closer to the beloved EU Turkey are not too bad.

Outsourcing jails has always seemed a good idea to me. Bung the Thai's or the Burmese a one-off £250K per lifer and ask no further questions.

Our legal system deems that loss of liberty is punishment enough - harsh conditions and physical abuse are not considered part of the package.

That's the difference between a civilised penal system and a non-civilised penal system.

You may scoff at that - but who knows, maybe one day a relative or friend may be very grateful for it.

If a friend or relative of mine committed such a heinous crime as I would deem necessary for outsourcing then I myself would pack their bags to go to Thailand.

yes we have a "civilised" penal system which means we have millions of sh1tbags terrorising the populace. Interesting that AH et al consider it civilised to impose comfort on our low lives whiles imposing misery on the law abiding.

I did not mention 'imposing comfort' on anyone - criminal or not.

I do not consider it civilised to impose misery on the law-abiding - that could be a good reason why I did not say that.

I said that our judicial system considers loss of liberty to be the level of punishment it wishes to impose - that is a fact.

It has nothing to do with how comfortable our prisons are - that is a separate debate.

I agree with what you stated though I would point out that judges hands are often tied by legislation and sentencing guidelines.

I get the impression when reading some judge's comments that they would have liked to issue a tougher sanction so sometimes the punishment doesn't appear to fit the crime but that is also another debate to be had!
