I can't help but notice all the babies and toddlers amongst the refugees. The war in Syria has been going on for about 4 years, so these people chose to have children in a war zone/refugee camp.
I also notice that despite losing everything, they have managed to hold on to their mobile phones. Will we have to pick up the bill for that too?

They leave behind the larger items and take essentials that they can carry. Most of them are well off enough to have been able to pay many hundreds to 'people smugglers' and so it's hardly surprising that they can afford phones
