This lad seems to be what every school needs...a bright, articulate pupil. What a pity that the school didn't recognise that.

Complete over-reaction by the school. Agree that it is their loss.

His father, an Islamist campaigner, taught him well. He refused to answer any questions the police asked him.
It was possible it was something his father was 'experimenting' with, was it not?
Have you seen the clock, mikey?
It just looks like clock components bought of a shelf from maplins...nothing good about it and for some bizarre reason then stuck in a case.

This is so simple.

So ...

The school authorities don't know if it's a dangerous device. They can't make the correct call me very time. So, they have to choose between ...

Over-reacting, or

Under-reacting

If they over-react, the WORST that can happen is that one pupil is traumatised by being arrested and having to move schools.

If they under-react, the WORST that can happen is that, next time, it IS a bomb, and children are killed.

Now ... imagine you're a parent at that school.

If I had a child ... and they were at that school ... there is only one possible answer ...

If you even vaguely suspect that there is even the remotest possibility that it might be an explosive device ... you DO NOT pussyfoot around ... you come down on the situation like a ton of bricks. End of!
I think I would have got a little nervous had I been his teacher also. Looks like it could go boom.
joggerjayne seems switched on
obviously switched on
And just suppose it had gone BOOM !

Would we all be saying ... oh yes, lots of children are dead, but the school did the right thing by not over-reacting?

Hmmmmmm......

///I said: it's sad they thought that kid had a bomb.
She said: they didn't think he had a bomb.
I said: yes, they thought he made a bomb and even called the police.
She said: They just wanted to humiliate a little Muslim boy. They didn't think he had a bomb.
I said: Don't be a conspiracy theorist. They might be a little prejudiced, but I'm sure they thought he had a bomb.
She said: OK.
But they didn't evacuate the school, like you do when there's a bomb.
They didn't call a bomb squad - like you do when there's a bomb.
They didn't get as far away from him as possible, like you do when there's a bomb.
Then they put him and the clock in an office: not like you do when there's a bomb
Then they waited with him for the police to arrive, and then they put the clock in the same car as the police.
Then they took pictures of it.

I said: Damn.....They never thought he had a bomb. ///
Some excellent points there, jackthehat. Anyway, the father is so proud of his son's building abilities he's taking him to visit Mecca(ano)...OK: I'm leaving.
// It's all very well being wise after the event. But what would you have said if it had been a bomb - som ething that isn't beyond the bounds of possibility, is it.//

yeah it is for chrissakes what sort of skool did you go to DB ?.

OK if it were a gun....I would agree not beyond the realms of possibility

The 14 year old was on the verge of growing a beard, but the alert authorities stopped him in the nick of time.
Hey least he's getting a trip to Mecca out of it :-)
Might be worth having a look at what his father is best know for...just saying..
Google is your friend !
Just seen the BA- thanks mikey, I do try to keep a sense of proportion.
I have to admit it looks more like a bomb than a clock.
As an aside, and here I'm being strictly pedantic since clocks and timepieces are my hobby, a device is not a clock unless it strikes the hours. If it merely indicates the time, then it is a time piece.
