He got 'life' he is only out on licence after serving 45 years. One mistake and he can be returned to jail without a further sentence or trial.
Question Author
No doubt his victims would be delighted to have a second chance themselves eh.
Could he be out now because he was sentenced before the introduction of 'whole life' tariffs?
Question Author
he was given "life", that, to me is unambiguous.
Because the screws didn't turn a blind eye.
He would have been something of a hero to many inmates. The. Screws wouldn't have needed to protect him.
Au contraire Sandy. I was a police cadet at Hendon Training school just half hours coach drive to Wormwood scrubs Rec in Shepherds Bush at the time these 3 officers were gunned down. I remember crawling around the vicinity ot the slaughter on my hands and knees . A 17 year old thinking,so this is what I am joining into.Great introduction to the Met Police.
In later years I would visit Shepherds Bush nick in the course of my work and look at the brass remembrance plaque in the front office waiting room. Always worth a fiver in the Metropolitan and City Police Widows and Orphans box on the counter.
The point was that villains and old lags would approach police officers in the streets in those days and express their condolences. Crime was a cat and mouse game then and it was a "fair cop guv" if they were apprehended. Different world to now.
I am positive that the screws were in fear of their jobs if any harm came to this piece of detrious. I think a book was writtenabout this episode called "No answer Foxtrot 11" or something like that.
Believe me there were lags in those days who would like to have helped him slip on a bar of soap and fatally bump his head.!!

Of Course, obviously, Roberts was a nutter and didn't play the "Its a fair cop guv" rules. He actually was considered to have dishonoured the old school villains ethics. :-) May be not the best way of describing it but I think you get my drift.
Retrocop, 5 police officers were fatally shot and 3 fatally stalled in the 2000's compared to 8 shot and 2 stabbed in the 1960s.
Not so different after all.

You can throw statistics around but I can assure you there will be spikes.
You want to start a thread on capitol punishment or something.? I am describing anecdotal eyeball experience at the time.
Where did you gain your experience as a police officer as a matter of interest?
He passed his driving test at the age of 79??
God help us. How many more will he add to his butcher's bill ? Perhaps his new career will be a "get away driver". I would of thought he was too institutionalised to adopt to the outside world as a pedestrian let alone be let loose with another lethal weapon.
Best he keeps off my street
He had been out working on day release for years before his release last November so he's had plenty of time to become accustomed to life 'outside'.
That fact does little to placate my anger that his man is still breathing let alone out on the streets. IMO he is still a danger. It was only ,what, six years ago he threatened harm to owners of an animal sanctuary whilst on day release. How does he afford a car ,if it was his he used to pass his test, and all the costs of running it? Why can we not see the pictures they talk of when he apparently smirked at the camera after his driving test ?
If the government cannot fulfil the promise they gave that cop killers would serve life then they should allow police officers to be armed. Only last week a officer was shot and wounded. Why should they continue to willingly risk their life everyday for a betrayal from the governent and for the most part an ungrateful public they serve?
Few muderers should have their liberty ever. At least till their 90y. Will it be Brady or Soham killers next ? This is an absolute disgrace to the police force & their families.
You mean Soham killer?
I wonder if innocent Timothy Evans has been released yet - oh, no, they hanged him of course. The good old days.
Not to mention Derek Bentley, hanged because his mate (who is still alive and free) killed a policeman when Derek shouted "Let him have it Chris".
