I was a police cadet at Hendon Training school just half hours coach drive to Wormwood scrubs Rec in Shepherds Bush at the time these 3 officers were gunned down. I remember crawling around the vicinity ot the slaughter on my hands and knees . A 17 year old thinking,so this is what I am joining into.Great introduction to the Met Police.
In later years I would visit Shepherds Bush nick in the course of my work and look at the brass remembrance plaque in the front office waiting room. Always worth a fiver in the Metropolitan and City Police Widows and Orphans box on the counter.
The point was that villains and old lags would approach police officers in the streets in those days and express their condolences. Crime was a cat and mouse game then and it was a "fair cop guv" if they were apprehended. Different world to now.
I am positive that the screws were in fear of their jobs if any harm came to this piece of detrious. I think a book was writtenabout this episode called "No answer Foxtrot 11" or something like that.
Believe me there were lags in those days who would like to have helped him slip on a bar of soap and fatally bump his head.!!

The story of the Shepherds Bush slaughter.
The story of the Shepherds Bush slaughter.
That fact does little to placate my anger that his man is still breathing let alone out on the streets. IMO he is still a danger. It was only ,what, six years ago he threatened harm to owners of an animal sanctuary whilst on day release. How does he afford a car ,if it was his he used to pass his test, and all the costs of running it? Why can we not see the pictures they talk of when he apparently smirked at the camera after his driving test ?
If the government cannot fulfil the promise they gave that cop killers would serve life then they should allow police officers to be armed. Only last week a officer was shot and wounded. Why should they continue to willingly risk their life everyday for a betrayal from the governent and for the most part an ungrateful public they serve?
