I will never forget dear old Reggie Bosanquet.
He read a news item back in the 70s during the Fireman's strike.
Apparently a grateful old lady invited an army crew of a Green Goddess fire appliance into her house for tea and biscuits after they had rescued her moggie from a nearby tree. She waved them off as they reversed off her drive and ran over the cat.!!!
Reggie couldn't contain himself and exploded in laughter live on air. He got a rollikin but bounced back as we do. :-)
Sadly the Steel Industry is a hazardous occupation. BSC Margham,Port Talbot had it's own hospital and ambulance sevice as well as a Fire Brigade within that vast complex.
Every so often the blast furnaces had to be relined with brick and fireclay I was told. The men never waited the proscribed time to let the furnace cool down. (Loss of earnings or bonus I suppose whilst unproductive.)
They put on asbestos suits and B.A. and climbed into those still hot ovens to get them going again.
