The one thing they don't want is to spend the rest of their days in jail, so that's what they should get. Give them what they don't want, not what they do want.
In an ideal situation we should uphold the morals and principles of fair justice, and a proper trial. But no one is going to prioritise that over getting the siege ended, regardless that the culprits get killed. Those who caused the siege are the ones responsible for all the outcomes. For sure it is vengeance rather than justice to want death & injury; but it is understandable since people are not perfect, and his death during the siege solves the issue instantly. No bad thing.
