Well I think the aircraft carrier role is more suited to invasion tactics and even humanitarian relief. They provide a combat air patrol on the other side of the world (Argentina/Falklands) should we need to deploy Amphibious forces. Remember the invaders are normally on the back foot and need all the CAP they can get. Not feasible in the South Atlantic when your air cover operates out of RAF Coningsby.
A few nuclear powered subs are always handy to focus the enemy's mind.
HMS Conqueror/ Belgrano. Who want's to scrap Trident by the way?
Mr Putin will always be aware that a RN nuclear equipped Sub is lurking within distance to unleash a whole basket of Mushrooms however.Once the flat tops are off the slips we better think about the aircraft they carry as well. :-)
