No doubt the Turkish air force were primed for this, but, as previously observed, this was the culmination (hopefully the culmination) of months of provocation.
Why, one might almost think ...
But I'll leave the conspiracy theories to others ...

wasnt there some sailor-boy outside Copenhagen a few hundred years ago who said - I really dont hear any Russian transmissions ?

So pleased our Typhoon/Tornado boys at Leuchars don't have a hair trigger on the panic button. If they did there would be loads of Crashed Migs all over UK airspace. If they actually thought Russia was there to bomb us they would of shot them down . Same old cat and mouse.Scramble ,fly along side, shake head at Ivan and make tut tutting gestures whist pointing thumb backwards and mouthing "Russia is back there mate.". They all fly home and have bacon and eggs for brekkie. So much more civilised and controlled. As for Captain Mannering's finest opening up on the pilots whilst under the brolly!!! Unthinkable. Barbaric,Savage and typical of your Johnny Turk.
retro, the Russian planes buzzing round our coasts have never, to my knowledge, actually flown into UK airspace, just behaved in a dangerous fashion by turning off certain flight transponders. Although I said that we would shoot them down if they DID do that, that is probably not true (though once a raning was issued, they would) We are not in a tense - effectively proxy - war situation with them, as Turkey is.
So the situation Turkey finds itself in is quite different.

So Turkey thought they were about to get nuked so they thought it worthwhile to exercise a bit of muscle and prod the bear .Had they forgotten they are members of NATO? Turkey are playing a dangerous game and it would be helpful to all for them to nail their true colours to the mast so every one knows where they stand. Are they for or agin Daesh?

Erdogan is a 'for'. Though ISIS is only a component in this megalomaniac's lust for power and the re-building of the Ottoman Empire on Sunni lines(with the added novelty of the EU attached), and himself as the Grand Sultan presiding over it. He is a cunning and highly dangerous madman.

",for the simple reason that they are NOT Europeans. "
Let's be honest, the fact that they are not (ahem, cough, er ... "Europeans") is the real reason for all the indignation about what's happened:-)
"Who are the combatants in this 'proxy' war ? "
The Turks are arming their "brother" Turkmen people in Syria, and the Russians, to whom they those people are the enemy of Assad (which they are) are bombing them. Russia is busting a gut to prop up Assad, Turkey is the sworn enemy of Assad.
We are a bit iffy with the Turks as the Turks hate the Kurds,, who are or have been the most effective fighting force against IS (oh, them....)
