We are constantly told "where would the NHS be without immigration?"

Well according to this report, perhaps somewhat better.

Would you prefer hospitals to close rather than employ 'immigrants'?
From where would the shortfall of staff be made if you would prefer those hospitals to remain open?

Perhaps we could recruit in the same way as we once did, instead of first having to obtaining a degree in nursing.

I would certainly agree with that but until such a time as the recruitment requirements are altered we have to work with the system as it is.

There was no suggestion that overseas nurses were less capable or made more mistakes than the home-grown variety so it came down to patients not liking the cultural difference. There are more old people in hospital than youngsters and from personal observation I find some oldies more racist than young people.

And when my uncle was in hospital for over 3 months the communication problems were due to him, not the nursing staff. They couldn't understand a word he said. My sister and I had to translate. We're Irish and we weren't translating to foreign nurses/consultants....

When my step father was in hospital he found some of the nurses very difficult to understand - he was very slightly deaf and blind too so that did not help either

I on the other hand can hear a pin drop and I still found some accents difficult

It is not a matter of the patients not liking the cultural differences either, unless of course you include not making themselves understood as a cultural difference?

This survey is based entirely on subjective patients' views.

Given the widespread xenonhobia in this country, I suspect similar correlation would emerge from any professions, and would have no bearing on the real efficiency of the profession's staff.

I'm sure there is a cause and effect issue here, anotheroldgit. It's at least as likely that the problem is the other way round- struggling hospitals with the most problems (maybe old buildings, higher workloads, more difficult patients, all sorts of possible reasons) probably find it more difficult to retain staff and attract the best local nurses so have to rely more on agency staff and overseas nurses who may be less aware of the issues at the hospital

So? Isn’t that what matters? If not why do major companies (who have to operate in the real world and make a profit by providing customer satisfaction) go to great lengths canvassing the views of their customers? One of the largest (BT) was constantly told by its customers that they disliked intensely dealing with Indian call centres (not because they were racist but because of communication problems). The company finally (if belatedly) listed and plans to move all its call centres back to the UK.

If you're not doing what your customers want (by listening to what they tell you they want) they will take their custom (and their money) elsewhere. Oh but I forgot. Most people using the NHS cannot do that can they? They certainly can't take their money elsewhere as it's already been appropriated from them. And most of them cannot take their custom elsewhere because, having already paid for a service they cannot afford to pay again.

Once a hospital starts to get a poor reputation then fewer UK trained nurses (who presumably can 'cherry pick' the hospital they work in) will want to work there. So the situation becomes even worse.
There are simply not enough UK nurses available and it does not look as though that situation will change in the foreseeable future.

agreed - it would be no hospitals and travelling or those staffed by immigrants.

70% of medical juniors in hospitals in the seventies were commonwealth graduates and I dont think it is anything like that now. O and by the way who was minister of Labour when the first rush were allowed in in the early sixties ? None other than your fave Enoch Powell I recall [min of health in 1962 as well - not a great success ]

Others in rural areas are really monopoly employers

I was in a facilty where one of the nurses commented : I would rather be unemployed than work in this place.
I duly reported this to the admin whom I have to say - didnt give a flying frack about it
