It's unbelievable the conditions people live in. The government replaced some of the corrugated iron sheds with concrete bunkers so it didn't look "too" bad when tourists drove past during the football World Cup a couple of years ago. The mentality of "life is cheap" remains though. Blacks are still second class citizens; women are fodder for whatever.
No, I don't think it can be saved. The reference to Aids is interesting. A South African doctor friend told me that she’d warned a man suffering from Aids not to have unprotected sex with anyone because he would ‘give it’ to them. When she next spoke to him, he confessed he had had unprotected sex, and was now convinced that since he had ‘given’ it to the partner, he was no longer infected. A mind-set not unusual in Africa.
The newspapers there are always full of stories of rape and murder. Thankfully, as tourists we don't see it, but it happens all the time. I don't know what can be done. Does it help that their national cricket team has to have 4 non-white players? At least they have something to aspire to? I don't know.
