Police did all they could in this incident and all agreed they took the correct course of action.
The PETA spokeswoman however had to give her idiotic two pennorth worth:

It was a loose dog on a dual carriage way that had bitten a Policeman -end of - if they had captured it and given it back to the Hunt Kennels the huntsman would have killed it anyway. It would have been kinder to shoot it but that was not possible (apparently)

Don't agree ,this was a high profile case and the spokes person reminded people out there that animal right institutions exist .various clips have been on television of various creatures on the highways but all have ended safely .dog probabally was frightened and would have been off the road as soon as it could ..The safety of motorists is paramount of course but running over it maybe a bit extreme when firemen and safety groups spend hours each day rescuing cats and other animals from peril
//North Wales Police said the foxhound could not be brought under control and the "only safe option" was to destroy it in the early hours of Monday. //

What was the alternative?
"He said the "potential for a serious collision was present throughout"..."

Not least from police cars careering about the place trying to run over a dog.
Their firearms mob don't seem to be up to much either if this was the next best option.
Motor way could have been closed it would not have taken long for the dog to have left the highway.it would have sent out the message that even in this high speed world we live in we still care for the dumb animals
I live 3 or 4 miles from where this took place, believe me that road is empty at 3am in the morning. We are not talking M6 here. The local traffic police (dubbed the traffic taliban long ago) have previous with this sort of thing, having tazered a sheep in a similar incident. We had a few words about it in the 'local', and conclude, that we expect the helicopter to be deployed with machine guns blazing (similar to the 'Heuys' in the Vietnam war) if ever a cow gets loose.

The dog had already bitten an officer and remained a hazard. Unpalatable though it is, running it over was deemed the best course of action as the firearms option was not possible. Given that the owner was happy that the Police took the only avenue open I don't really see what the problem is, but hey-ho.
I wonder if they will prosecute themselves for dangerous driving, or perhaps the RSPCA will bring a case of cruelty to animals.
//Their firearms mob don't seem to be up to much either if this was the next best option.//

How do you work that out?

In the circumstances I think they done what had to be done, I'm sure the decision did not come easily!

Togo,
Maybe the Police will prosecute the hunt for failing to secure their hounds and causing a menace to traffic/public nuisance?
I guess one's view will depend on how much faith one has in the claim that a police force could not catch the dog and opted for an easier solution instead.
That poor animal must have been terrified and ultimately paid for its fear with its life.

Tapering it would have been preferable to squishing it!!

Tasering *
If person's would have dies in an accident due to this dog, what would have been said?
Died "Even"
Accidents happen every day, TWR. Condoning off the motorway would also have been a preventative measure.

Did this poor animal have no rights?
Cordoning For Funks Sake! !
//The owner, who is from outside the North Wales area//

//Maybe the Police will prosecute the hunt for failing to secure their hound//

Who says it was from a pack belonging to a hunt? Can't find that, perhaps people now organise midnight hunts up the A55 from rural England.
"The dog had gone missing from a hunt and police said the owner supported the force's decision."
//Who says it was from a pack belonging to a hunt? Can't find that, perhaps people now organise midnight hunts up the A55 from rural England.//

I also read that the hound had gone missing from the hunt.
Have I dreamt this, but didn't the police close a road/motorway a few years ago to let a duck and her offspring cross it?
