This Is Embarrassing For The G O P
I mean, it's already bad, but it's literally a bunch of old chaps arguing about who has the bigger dongle.

If you don't know what the whole Trump U thing is, it's another one of his dubiously grand named pocket fillers. You can find more about that here:

Anyway. I suppose I need a question. How about:
Can you see a way of moving the focus of the Republican primary towards something more substantial than Trump?

They picked a weirdo candidate four years ago and they know what will happen if they do it again. They don't want to spend yet another 4-8 years in the political wilderness.
The Party should have recognised Trump for what he is.......an ignorant mouth-on-a-stick, and they should have got together to defeat him, instead of fighting amongst themselves. Trump is where he is because the Party let him be there.

There was a Viz comic character whose name I can't recall just now but his strapline was all about his "large handed activities".
Where's Finbarr, when you need him?
@Ed
You asked about "something", rather than "someone", which leaves me perplexed.
They don't seem to have reacted to threats of a "pre-emptive" strike from a certain regime which has just had its trade sanctions stiffened. A missile defence training exercise should perk up the campaign a few notches.

Republic is just the condition of a state not being run by a monarch or other feudal structure.
After becoming monarch-less, you can still have left-right politics… or right and even further right (USA) politics or left-and-nothing-else (China, Cuba) or totalitarianism (Russia, NK).

Hypognosis - I'm not sure about the birthers, but this article seems to suggest they've started:

"To Cruz skeptics, his ineligibility is based on the fact that he was born in Calgary, Alberta, Canada in 1970. The mere fact that he was born on foreign soil would be enough, but, many believe his father was a Canadian citizen at the time of Cruz’s birth, and that Cruz’s Delaware born mother may have applied for and received Canadian citizenship before her son was born too. From their perspective, this supplementary evidence should make it clear Cruz is ineligible."

They simply cannot find a way to get at him, they have tried everything they can think of but what they fail to see is that the voters are seeing him as a breath of fresh air. People are sick of plastic career politicians.

I take it you wrote that without listening to the rest of the debate where they all said they will back him.

"Trump is winning because, astonishingly he is the most credible cndidate out of all of them."
Bednobs, you have a point. Part of the American dream is that they're all millionaires in waiting. One day they'll be just like Trump, so naturally he's the one that many can relate with.
He does have that anti-establishment fascist thing going for him. It's quite appealing for someone to turn up who just says things like "we'll just kill them all" and seems to have no regard for the current structure. While we all like the benefits the current structure of our societies provides us, these often fall into the background when we focus on the issues it presents.
Trump isn't a constitutional republican (if he is one at all) and as such seems free to talk big without saying much and some people accept that that is his "policy".

I missed this, sorry. I meant "something" in terms of policy platform.

This wiki link explains all about the GOP....makes for very interesting, and for me, quite surprising reading ::::

"Founded in the Northern states in 1854 by anti-slavery activists, modernizers, ex-Whigs, and ex-Free Soilers, the Republican Party quickly became the principal opposition to the dominant Democratic Party and the briefly popular "Know Nothing Party".
