Daily Express today calls for the burka to be banned. What chance of that? Does anyone think it shouldn't be and if so why?

In places like banks and court I agree with a ban....but not in general.
We have had this topic many times, same answer from me.

A symbol of oppression ... ban it.
agree with Talbot.

never thought I would say that.
It can be seen as a symbol of oppression, and I personally dislike it, but some chose to wear it.
There is a woman lives close by who wears one. I help her clean her car when it is icy as she has 3 young children. She is very friendly and I like her but I find it difficult as I can only see her eyes.
It’s not only a garment of barbaric oppression for those who have no voice, it’s a visible symbol of the political affiliation of those who do have a choice. While well-meaning people continue to defend it the voiceless will remain oppressed and the rest will continue to laugh at our naivety. It is a uniform that has no place in western society. It should be banned.
Ban it immediately!!!
And what will happen to the oppressed women if it's banned?
They'll have no going-out clothes !
IF there are some women who choose to wear it then that number will be very, very low in % terms. I have followed many Muslim women on Twitter to get their views on subjects such as this, not one of them supports the wearing of a burka. Furthermore there are many Muslim women who don't support the wearing of a hijab.

And what will happen to the oppressed women if it's banned?

They will remain oppressed ... just the same as it is now.

I'm on the whole they will just stop wearing their burka, some may even go back to their country of origin and some may never leave their house again. When any law like this is introduced there are victims unfortunately, but these will be victims of their husbands! It may also discourage others coming to this country.
It's a horrible garment, no doubt about it, but if it's the difference between a woman being able to leave the house or not, I'd say no to a ban.
Ummmm. So hundred of thousands suffer for the sake of just a few?
That is a truly sad reason not to ban it, ummmm.

Accepting the the current oppression because of the threat of the oppression getting worse is not the way to go. imo.
I don't know, Ratter, I have no clue how many are forced to wear it.
Talbot...it's very sad.
ummmm, I’m sure you don’t realise it, but you are enabling the men that do oppress their women to continue to do so. A few school runs, shopping trips, visits to doctors and dentists with the kids, and those men would soon come around.
The Burka???.............ban leggings.
The problem is not with the garment per se but the fact that the face is masked, same as with the niqab or yashmak.
