If Corbyn turns out to be as bad as he appears, we will know before 2020. His first test will be the the two forthcoming bye-elections. Then the London Mayor election and Local elections. Then there will be numerous other bye-elections before 2020.

The two forthcoming bye elections are in Labour held constituencies, so will be a good measure of whether he is voter toxic or not.

We have had the community charge/council tax debate before.

The charge (and its architect) would have survived if it was better. Its main problems were that it did not consider the ability to pay, and was perceived as unfair. So hostels for the homeless were paying the same as the Queen.

Many parts of the UK vote against legislation but still have it imposed upon them. I doubt many of inner London’s MP’s voter for the Community Charge (to give it it’s proper name as it was unrelated to voting rights) , nor many Welsh MPs. But the Westminster Parliament is that of the entire UK, not of any of the component parts.

The UK is consistently outvoted in the EU Parliament and has legislation imposed upon it which does not suit it. The solution to both these problems is straightforward. Instead of constantly trotting out the mantra that “big is beautiful” and “we’re all better off together in one big happy family” just tell it like it is. Big governments are not the way forward – too many people get what none of them wants. To that end Scotland should leave the UK and the UK should leave the EU. Then we will all be able to have governments that work in our best interests and which do not have to pander to the requirements of foreigners who often outvote them.

And yes, the "Poll Tax" was a far fairer system than the one it replaced or the one we have now (which are virtually identical). It removed iniquities such as a retired couple living on pensions paying the same to have their dustbins emptied as the house next door where a couple and their three adult children all work in well paid jobs.
