It's not really harmless fun if people are offended by it, though. And while one can take offence for the wrong reasons as well as the right ones, the only point I'm making there is that there shouldn't be an issue in giving more consideration to how what you say and do might be perceived by others. Of course, you can then choose to ignore them, and in general I'd support preserving that choice. You should have the right to be offensive... and the good sense not to -- or at least, not to go out of your way to cause offence for its own sake.
Haha... hahaha... no. No, I stayed away from all that mostly. Probably the wrong 'choice', but never mind.
You're nothing if not flexible, Jim.
Either you're missing the point, or I'm not making it clearly enough, but either way my position hasn't changed, in the course of this thread at least.
I didn't go to university but I am not missing the point.
But you kind of are, though -- I started off by saying that I thought this particular story showed a sad excess, but the excessive side of these complaints is all some people seem able, or willing, to see.
Did you hear they had to stop calling the Masters, Masters in some US colleges. Echoes of slavery, apparently. (That's not a joke)

Pursuing triviality and piling it into...well...a mountain, is what I meant.
jim360 ///Call it a perceived subtext, if you will. But Most of the time I don't think it's entirely unreasonable to draw that conclusion. It's exhibitionist and attention-seeking///

Presumably, dressing up in women's clothes would be considered a completely different kettle of fish?
Svejk
My word. It's all gone quiet. What happened?
Well, I for one, am following Svejk's advice, and dressing up as a lumberjack.
This seems to me to be ridiculous. Lighten-up kids, for goodness's sake. We can all survive a bit of fun poked at us. I grew up with 'Sticks and stones may break my bones, but names can never hurt me'.

'Specky-four-eyes gumboil' was what the nastier kids in my junior school called me (I wore glasses). They meant ill. I was hurt, but rose above it. This festival is innocent fun and I cannot understand the furore.
Jourdain2, that is precisely what I meant in my post at 1812: some people like to be outraged in the same fashion as a plants like to be watered.
Jourdain
Quite. I have always thought of a fancy dress ball as:
Theme lead
Topical
Satirical
innovative
I just hate the way these so called intelligensia think they have to find some political correct agenda.
These students think they are so effing smart with their debates in the common room and have not yet knuckled down to the hard real slog of getting a degree.
God pity them when they get out in the real world and try to find a job if all they worry about in Uni is fancy dress.
:0) xxxx stuey and retrocop. (Hope you are getting along OK after your op retroc.)

If you want to delve into your history books, in support of your anti-British views, then perhaps you should remember that we were once invaded by the Italians who had the cheek to build a wall, much in the way that such as you criticise Trump for suggesting something similar, and don't forget those marauding Vikings who raped and plundered our land, the Saxons, the Angles, not to mention those pesky Normans.

/// "They" might say that success at Trivial Pursuit is all about how well you know your "history according to white people"... ///

Why bring colour into it, if I had done the same you would have got the 'racist' card out.

And you have the cheek to call me a hypocrite, how dare you sir.

There is one on here who wants to take us back to this time, the date I mean.
