After the 'negotiations' which have taken place, it must surely be obvious to all that Turkey will become a full member of the EU soon. It is quite bad enough that they will all have free travel. Surely no-one can be so blind as to not see this?
So, we already know, it just needs publicising.

Can't see the problem. We can't cope with the thousands streaming into Europe now. Once Turkey is given free access those thousands will potentially turn into millions. What's not to like?

No it won't. The EU have been making promises to Turkey for 30 years.

Turkey, or at least a state that only Turkey recognises, occupies the northern third of an EU member - Cyprus.

As long as that situation exists how can they be considered for entry?

Does anyone know - I've been searching and can't find out - what are the requirement of votes needed for a new member, do all 28 member states have to agree or is it based on a majority vote?

Also, as if Turkey wasn't enough, waiting in the queue are mainly Muslim Macedonia, and Albania, and mainly orthodox Serbia and Montenegro.

My impression is that as long as the accession criteria are met (the criteria that the existing member states have already agreed on), no individual agreement by member states is required for new members to join.

Ellipsis; Thanks for the link, you might be right I think, that is appalling if it is. I haven't read it all through, but I can't see how any one state could object.

Very true. But for 29 of those years the EU held all the cards. Now it does not because its ludicrously porous external borders have allowed all and sundry to pour in from the Middle East via Turkey into the EU. The hopefully soon to be abandoned Schengen Agreement couple with Frau Merkels disastrous open invitation to the world's dispossessed have exacerbated that problem and now Turkey is making outrageous demands, including visa free travel (which seems to have been conceded) and accelerated EU admission (which will almost certainly be agreed by the panic stricken Euromaniacs). This of course does not include the £3bn and rising which they have demanded to swap one migrant landing in Greece for one already in Turkey. (Seems like a good deal and one which will probably be ruled illegal).

As I said in a question yesterday, the EU has never flinched when it comes to making decisions which were, with the benefit of foresight were it heeded, "not a good idea" (i.e. ones which cause chaos and disorder). Admitting Turkey to the EU will prove no exception.
