Sounds good to me - this is a step in the rehabilitation process - they work and move about a place that feels real, rather than being spat straight out of a nasty hole.
At least they might be able to imagine a version of life on the other side where they don't return to crime?
Importantly, this is on an island, away from normal people. The main function of prison is to keep those who transgress the rules of our society, away from it.
This appears to continue to do this, despite being nicer.

Hi Ed, please move it where you wish, I only put it in Chatterbank as I wasnt actually asking a question, more of a subject for discussion.
I totally agree with the idea of rehabilitation and it appears to be working but come on, that's hardly much of a punishment.
Crapatcrypics, why should he get off so lightly, there is no suffering in death, a few moments and it is all over, let him sweat it out in prison!!

Prison is a deterrent, and it doesn't seem to be working very well?
As I stated above, in my opinion the main role of prison is to keep those who break the law away from the rest of us i.e. it's about exclusion from society, and protection for the law abiding within it.
Anything else prison does is secondary to that?

Isn't the general consensus that no one thinks they'll be caught? So the time to crime ratio isn't a factor in that decision-making process?
On the other hand - maybe it's working perfectly, and we're asking too much of the prison system. After all, bad guys tend to get put away for a bit, and we're out here obeying the law. Maybe everyone out here has been deterred effectively?

I agree with the concept of keeping wrong doers away from the rest of us. Setting aside Anders Breivik and his ilk whose terms of imprisonment are very long and possibly permanent...and at this point of course...the question arises of where evil tips into madness.

How many times do I have to say on here that it is not prison that is the punishment , it is the removal from society.
As I have also said many times, in the UK at least ( almost certainly in other places as well) 75% of ALL those who have been in prison even for a very short sentence NEVER work again, because the prejudice against employing an 'ex con' is so strong!
Once you have served even a week or two in jail you are virtually excluded from normal society for the rest of your life.

The 'deterrent' is the deprivation of liberty, the loss of the ability to earn a 'proper wage', and the separation of the prisoner from his/her family and support network.......and that is also the punishment.
Anything other than that is 'punitive' and cannot be guaranteed to make sure that a contrite and rehabilitated offender is released back into society.
Surely it has to be more cost effective both in terms of ££££s and the well-being of society to ensure that the number of recidivists is a low as possible?
