Doesn't natural beauty shine through regardless of colour?

'Being black meant she had to be twice as good'. She knew from an early age.....

Claiming one has to be twice as good as ... is a common enough fantasy. It means you can feel prouder of what you have achieved or have an excuse for what you didn't achieve. It's says more abut the individual's outlook than anything.
What is she actually trying to tell us, that she is twice as good as a white girl?
I agree, ag. She has one of those faces that you can't help staring at. The colour of her skin is irrelevant.
cobblers being black means the opposite.
What do you mean, TTT? She only has to be half as good as white models to get the work?
I can't be bothered with reading the link but I will concur ... natural beauty shines through regardless of colour.

She stated that she was not being chosen for shows because of the colour of her skin.

How did she know this? I can't imagine rejectors citing colour as the reason!
She's managed to make a fortune, so I don't know why she's complaining. There must have been enough designers and advertisers who did like her look, either because of - or regardless of, the colour of her skin.
frightening to think how bitter she'd be if she'd never made it ...
Ian Wright gives credit where its due

well not half but the world is full of what is known as "positive discrimination" to favour black people"
I think at the time she came to the fore yes she really did have to stand out in a very 'white' business so she has a point - not that I know why I'm sticking up for her, a true superbitch.
IMO one comes to the fore in the clotheshorse industry because one strikes lucky and someone with influence takes a liking and decides to help push forward your "career". Apart from not being self conscious on stage, how good at something do you have to be to walk around in clothes ?
i await mrs_o's contribution to the thread
It's a good article the 'twice as good' is a tiny part of it, ta for the link.
I'm with TTT
Ian Wright's a great chap, isn't he?
