The Belgian authorities have been very active and with some success, countering islamic terrorism in the country.
If, as seems likely, the explosions were bombs, it is more likely that the intended target was Belgian, not the US.

Belgium has been vigorously following leads since the Paris attacks and capturing potential terrorists. That explains why Belgium is the target now. It does not explain why dead bodies in an airport departure lounge is the fault of the liberal left?

Your question was if the intended target was an American aircraft, and I don't think it was. The targets were Belgian people in that terminal. Saying that, if the terrorists had bombs targetting passengers, then detonating them near US and El Al desks would have additional chance of killing American and Israeli people. But at the moment, the sighting of the bombs is just conjecture, nothing has been confirmed.

If anyone should manage to work out how they got explosives through security, for pity's sake don't post it on a public forum! We don't want copy artists doing the same!

Belgium has been on the highest possible level of alert since the events at the weekend. Whilst it is impossible to make any public building 100% secure, if as reported, two bombs were let off, it does suggest a major flaw, or a major breach in security.
Like naomi, I think they may have had inside help.

The explosions seem to have been in the check-in area so the emerging photographs seem to show. So 'not' smuggled through security at that point. It would be difficult to prevent that happening I would think. Sad times!
