Sounds like it's going to cause work for Royal Mail and may push up costs for the taxpayer if RM pass on a charge or extra staff have to be appointed by the government to sort it out. I'm not sure what it achieves really. I'd have thought it would have been wrong for the elected government not to set out its views on such an important decision.
I wish mine would arrive. I can't help wondering what all the fuss is about. In advance of the referendum on our continuing membership of the EU, the government has issued a leaflet setting out its stance. I can't see anything unusual about that. It's what I would expect of any government in this situation.
I quite agree that the leaflet is a disgraceful waste of taxpayers' money as well as breaking the spirit of the rules on spending for each side.
However, I find it odd that the proposed solution is to waste even more money by sending them back. I doubt very much that the government will meet the cost of the returns. I can't really see them being able to l instruct Royal Mail to simply dump the returned leaflets if they are in envelopes. But however they are handled it will incur costs which will almost certainly fall on the (privately owned) Royal Mail.
