That's true - but what if the race officials at Deptford got word that the vans which were supposed to pick up the unused bottles were stuck in traffic, so decided to just give the bottles away to the waiting spectators?

I'm not saying that this happened, but it's still a possibility.

All it takes is one of the race officials to say to someone, "You may as well take these..." and then word spreads.

But even if this were the case, divebombing for bottled water is pretty tacky.
