The 'public vote'was a Facebook joke that backfired!
I think that they are under no obligation to. But it'd show that they have a sense of humour if they did. After all the most popular suggestion wasn't obscene or anything. Just didn't have the gravitas hoped for, for a serious research vessel.
nice headline, mushroom.

Jo Johnson is brother of the more famous Boris, so I suppose it runs in the family.
No, I think it was a silly, childish name. Far better to honour one of our greatest Brits, like Sir David Attenborough for instance.
I'd rather it Baoty than some left wing green.

Lets go with it, show we are not stuffy.
It is a ship, not a boat.

Saying that, 'Mr Splashypants' doesn't wear clothes.
I suspect he splashes others' pants when they get too close.
think boaty should stay !!
the good ship Sir David Attenborough it is...

//I'd rather it Baoty than some left wing green //

if we'd had to go for a "left wing green" then my vote would have gone to Jason Kitkat, because he's as bonkers as Boaty McBoatface.....
//Jo Johnson is brother of the more famous Boris, so I suppose it runs in the family.//

//A website inviting suggestions attracted huge interest, with "Boaty McBoatface" being the big favourite.
But science minister Jo Johnson is reportedly cool on the idea.
He has said there are "more suitable" names.//

So Johnson was in favour of a more serious name. Sensible like his brother, but obviously not pompous enough for some. Still we can still carry on calling it Boaty McBoatface , especially if it annoys the self appointed thought police.
RSS Sir David Attenborough - The ship will have a high-tech sub on board which will be called Boaty McBoatface!

Pretty decent compromise that.
Togo, Jo is a lot more sensible than Boris. (For one thing, he held a proper journalist job for years; Boris was fired by The Times for making things up.) But it wasn't sensible to call for a public vote in the first place because now he's had to say, er, well, we didn't actually mean it. Trust the public or don't trust the public, whatever; but wise politicians dont' paint themselves into a corner like that.
Common sense prevails, thank goodness.
I thought it would be a great way to get children interested in science (I believe we have a lack of science subjects being taken up as options?). They could have had a web page / app and updates on recent findings etc. No vision some people, tut.
Good name for it.
There's now a petition (light-hearted) to get Sir David Attenborough to change his name to Boaty McBoatface

Yes....a common sense decision.
