Two days later we drove to Dover to catch a ferry to France, arriving at the port an hour before the due sailing. The checking of passengers at passport control took so long we missed the ferry and had to wait two hours for the next. That was for LEAVING the country!
Scrutiny at Dunkirk to return the following week was also strict. That was for a UK registered car and British citizens.

Until last March when we returned to UK, we were frequent travellers to and from France. We always had our passports checked and it took some time even with the electronics. Checked at the ferry ports in France to go to UK and checked in UK to go to France. Flying back, passports were checked at the French airport and again in UK before being allowed through.
