As for the channel, that's just insane. I know they want to get out of France but even that awful fate isn't worth risking one's life for.
I hadn't realised that the UK Border Force was situated on the French side of the channel. That's very good of the Frenchies.

who is the fella in Dads Army - white haired old buffer - who says things like 'you should be doing that you shouldnt'
yeah he should be on the boats
with a megaphone so that he can shout at the drowning people
'you shouldnt be doing that without a stamp in your passport!
what you doing there drowning without the proper paper work ?'
and then a voice behind him says - home jeeves ....
as 3T might say : problem solved !

/// Sandy...that would be the humanitarian response, not always popular here on AB. ///
Haven't you any humane feelings for your fellow countrymen, women and children?
Once again can you put a figure on how many we should take in, and unless your answer is every one of them, what about those that aren't included in that figure, would it not be inhuman in your eyes to leave them out also?

/// There are some on here that would push people back out to sea, along with any dead bodies. ///
And there are some on here who are prepared to welcome such as these.

//what Sandy and I are saying is that we should rescue people who arrive like this, and to do so is a humanitarian response. //
that is just what we should not be doing. we should instead be doing one of two things, either:-
1) discouraging people from attemting the crossing in totally unsuitable craft, or
2) giving allcomers free passage on the safety of a car ferry.
to give those in Calais any sort of indication that they will definitely be rescued if their boat disintegrates en route means that there will continue to be voyagers setting out in toy boats and the like, with the possibility of dead bodies - including BABIES - washed up on our beaches. remember there are very few resources left to patrol the channel with (only 3 coastguard cutters between dover and portsmouth).
