Cameron said very recently that it will be a long time before Turkey joins the EU. Since he gave no indication that he doesn't want them in, I suspect he's paying lip service to the electorate's concerns at this very sensitive time.

This referendum makes for some strange bedfellows. Normally, leaked Government papers about secret deals to do the opposite to their public pronouncements would be 'manna from heaven' to jno et al. They'd be gleefully hammering the last nails in Cameron's coffin, not 'manning the barricades' to defend him.
