//Field Marshal Lord Guthrie said he had changed his mind because he was concerned at moves to create a European army, which he said would be a "disaster". The former defence chief said that while he felt "more European than I do American" it was "absolutely unrealistic to think we are all going to work together".

"When things get really serious, we need the Americans. That's where the power is. //

Food for thought for those who think a European army is never going to happen?

Like I have said previously ... I'm surprised more haven't used this tactic.
I fully expect expect Cameron announcing he is switching sides on June 22nd.

:oP
I look forward to the BBC announcing this on their National News programmes.
No reasonable individual will have too much trust in the promises of governments. They change direction with the wind.
Cameron says we have the veto on this, but he doesn't say it will be used..
So if we need Wilson's 'Sheriff of the World,' it doesn't really matter if it's a Brit army or a European one, or both.

but that is what the electors want isnt it ?

back in 1965 I asked my history master why the two liverpool govts at the start of the nineteenth century - one was liberal and one repressive, and he answered .... because they wanted to stay in power probably
The Beeb have just discussed it on Breakfast.
so the pax europeana is not gonna replace pax americana in the near future and so it follows that we should Brexit

with logic like that, I can see why he stopped being head of the army ( but less how he got there in the first place )
they don't teach philosophy or logic in the army, Peter, how else do you arrive at that wonderful oxymoron, 'military intelligence.'
Most dangerous 'thing' in the British Army is a ' Rupert with a map'!!
If you are European and can speak German you will soon be able to join the German army ... plans are afoot.
I have no doubt that a European Army will happen. But the UK will not join.

22 EU countries are already in a joint army, it is called NATO.

The Reason the EU constantly fails to secure its own external borders, is because individual coumtries are tasked with the job, and they are not up with it. A co-ordinated pan Europe effort could not do any worse.

The Former Field Marshall says we should stick with the Americans. There is no reason we cannot fight alongside the EU and the Americans. The Americans have dragged us into Afghanistan, Iraq and Syria. There might be instances where Americas interest is different from ours. The US invaded Grenada, sovereign British territory, not too long ago. Likewise, our NATO partner Turkey might have different priorities than Europe, and Europe needs to have an alternative to that.

Isn't there a term for someone who switches sides mid-battle?
Question Author
Gromit, //Isn't there a term for someone who switches sides mid-battle? //

He isn't a traitor and it's very wrong of you to imply that he is. He's changed his opinion on how this country should proceed, but he's still loyal to it.
Oh God. History repeats itself. Certain Europeans aligned themselves to German military divisions and they were'nt Wermacht either. They even courted pro German muslims so they have no shortage of recruits now to join their new Bundeswhere. Wot was that about the EU taking the rest of us by stealth ??

I'm surprised you are struggling to find the word, Gromit ... having been labeled with it so often
A flip- flopper .
You would think that it would be essential for an army for all its personnel to speak the same language ...

Having the ability to speak German will be a prerequisite of joining the German military, so will this European army be European or German?

Might oaks ...
NATO has 28 country members, 22 of them EU members. Language does not appear to be a problem for them. I assume the primarily use English, but mother tongues are spoken. The same would happen in an EU Army.
NATO isn't a single army.
