"We understand that debates get heated, but personal attacks and abusive language will not be tolerated"

Can we all calm down a bit please?

I've been written to several times about how abrasive and aggressive this section has become.

Several have pointed out that the language in particular has become childish and brutish, with name calling and hyperbole being especially annoying.

So let's calm down a bit. Let's stop calling people "traitors to britain" and "friends of jihad" or similarly rude things.

If you can't make your opinion felt without resorting to these personal attacks, then you'll likely be met with suspension, or banning.

All the best,

Ed

This Referendum issue is sort of like a math/maths class: It has created quite a division amongst you, and the gap is multiplying daily with the addition of acrimonious remarks which is really subtracting from the quality of the site.

Mamya @ 23:04, Surely you mean Mockney?
You report people, AOG, you sensitive soul, you! :-)
o baldric stop being so exact

way back when - if someone shouted 'shoot!' did you turn around and ask:
" shoot who sir ? "
and this on somme day ....
Blimey ( again ) the last rhyming slang thread went into an unmarked grave priddy quig ! [ just now]
@AOG

exactly, that was the gist of my post...this specific OP seems to biased towards certain elements on here, yet others seem to be able to freely carry on with the usual insults and derogatory names at anybody who dares to not agree and share the same views....

Hello!

Yes! This is aimed at particular people! Not because of how they voted, but because they're being abusive on the site.

Do you have a problem with that? Would you like the abuse to continue?

The idea that I'm pushing some agenda other than wanting people to have a slightly better time, and make the site more welcoming to new users, is ludicrous.

Stop pretending to be the victims.

Perhaps some won't be happy until the news section becomes something like the reader's views section of the Guardian.
Question Author
Nah, just want you to be civil to people AOG. Cheers.
/// Stop pretending to be the victims. ///

The point is Ed that 'Victims' can be those on both sides of the political spectrum.
It is kind of the ABEd to issue a public written warning instead of going straight to the 'Banned' button. It gives people who like using this site, the opportunity to modify their behaviour and extend their stay.
Question Author
As stated, it's not about political leaning. It's about who is being nasty.
AOG,
The ABEd has already said this is nothing to do with your political views, it is about good manners and courtesy (or lack of).
Name them.
Ed.May I suggest that AB. adopts as a motto the words of John Stuart Mill;
"Every man or woman who says frankly and fully what he or she thinks is so far doing a public service. We should be grateful to him or her for attacking most unsparingly our most cherished opinions."

PP @ 1017,

That looks to me like a Personal Attack tbh.
I almost launched into the Monty Python philosophers' song there.
One of the members this thread is aimed at has been banned 15 times previously. The Ed is trying to avoud a 16th ban as the user obviously likes using the site.
How cryptic.
How do you know that, Gromit?
Fifteen times ??
