They can not charge extra. So this driver has quite rightly been sacked.
Nothing to do with Islam, it would be the same if the driver had a phobia against dogs and refused to take a guide dog. Moral of the story is, if you are not prepared to accept a guide dog do not get a job as a taxi driver!

No, Atalanta, the view of dogs as unclean (see Najis in Wiki) is based on the sayings of Mohammed (the Hadith). The main schools of Islamic law all teach that dogs should not be kept as pets.

//I have actually read the Koran, not long ago, and as far as I recall, there is no mention of anyone being defiled by dogs.//
that's right. the question of dogs is raised not in the koran, but in a hadith, or saying of the prophet. so far as islam is concerned, a hadith is practically the word of god delivered in the first person.

// Dogs are obviously not against their religion,//
erm yes Grom Grom - there is a saying ( hadith ) the prophet ( PBUH) would not go into a house where a dog dwelt ....
but it is against the current UK law- and I dont think a defence is "I am excused from this legislation by reason of my religion"
