More seriously, the Turkish army has a history of doing this and ruled the country for some time - can't remember the dates. The president before Erdogan took over from the army. I would guess that this is serious. Where it will lead is another matter. Any negotiations with the EU are out of the window to start with.

We live in interesting times.

It's a developing situation, to say the least. Reports coming in thick and fast of all sorts of horrible stuff, some of it retracted and re-released. It's obvious that *some* in the military are trying to take control, but appears not to stretch to the very top of the military as, apparently (eg https://twitter.com/AFP/status/754053586192048128 ), the top general is being held hostage.

Also some reports about twitter, etc being blocked have been denied elsewhere. At the moment... it's scary to watch how hollow the stability of the world is in practice, but I wouldn't rush to post any reports just yet.

For the record, I predicted this a month ago.

Sadly, The army may have to step in to stop mad Erdogan. Democracy is being undermined, he is arresting the opposition, closing newspapers that disagree with him, jailing writers and arresting military officers.

Turkey is about to be hit with an economic crisis. Tourism, which accounts for lots of jobs and earnings has failed this year. Putin ordered Russian tourists to holiday elsewhere after the shooting down of a Russian jet over Syria. They have obeyed and stayed away in their millions. Likewise British, German and Dutch are not going for fear of migrants, dead bodies on the beach, or terrorist attacks.
By the Autumn, Erdogans core vote will have crumbled, but the opposition have been neutralused. A military coup will save the country. //
