//Agnese Ciulla, a city councillor in Palermo in Sicily, said the situation was being made worse by lack of help from the Italian authorities.//
//“What is clear is that this loss of life was unnecessary and is the result of an insufficient and inadequate global response to this crisis.”//
There is a lack of global response and a lack of a correct response.

no point in blaming Italy, theyre bust or as good as, going/gone the same way as Greece they cant afford to do anything about it, theyve got enough domestic woes of their own to worry about....
another reason the eussr needed us to stay in, it needed our money to bail out the eyeties.....so now the sausage eaters will have to find the billions from somewhere...luckily its not us

Indeed very true. I roughly counted over 11.000 and the figure most probably will rise by end of 2016 . A big number and in most cases an unnecessary number of deaths. Reminds me of the wartime poster, "Is your journey really necessary?"
The answer to a lot of these latest deaths in the Med are 'No'.
I recall the photo of the little child washed up on the beach in Turkey incensed a poster on this thread to be the first to post it on AB saying we must do more to help these war torn refugees.
As the child and parents had been living in Turkey for three years with a job and accommodation it was hardly a true picture of a war torn refugee.
If people wish to spend money on probable suicide from sub sahara Africa just to get a better life then that is their problem and they should not be allowed to swamp Italy or Greece. The Italians used to have a Navy the envy of the world so they should patrol their waters more rigourously and tow the boats back. If that is an incursion into Libyan waters so be it.

Actually retrocop, i admit that i misinterpreted those numbers because they included dome for 2015 from other parts of the world I think rather than just the Med.
Anyway, sometimes I think we have to be cruel to be kind and so sending out the message 'we'll try to save you' may encourage more to take the risk. Having said that, i am not sure those making the journey know the risks- i suspect the traffickers take their money with a promise of a nice smooth ride and a prosperous future in Europe. We need to stop the boats setting off or turn them round much earlier

///Thousands of migrants have been rescued at sea and brought to Italy in the past week, adding to the 80,000 who have arrived so far this year, the vast majority having left from the coast of Libya.///
They should not be rescuing them and taking them to Italy. If they need rescuing fine, pick 'em up by all means and take 'em back where they came from, they should not be aiding Illegal Immigration.
