/// Rasha said the island was ‘full of old people’ and described it as ‘where people come to die’. ///
Looking at the other side of the coin Rasha, the old people on the island of Bute could say their Island is now becoming 'full of foreigners', and described it as 'where they come to sponge off us'.
But then that would be racist, wouldn't it?
/// Struggling to learn English, the fathers of the families – who both used to run businesses – said that most days they stay indoors or take walks on the seafront, feeling isolated. ///
Seeing that these fathers have all that time on their hands, so as to take part in these pursuits, and they and their families are supported by the British taxpayer, perhaps they could use this leisure time helping out the 'OLD' people of Bute, in return for all the hospitality that has been bestowed upon them.

These two ungrateful ageist are not thirty or below, they are 41 and 42. //
Age is about perception as well as time passed.
The islanders must seem very set in their ways, which is not a bad thing, they were probably born and raised on the island and no nothing else. But to refugees who may have lived in vibrant busy cities, the islanders must seem staid and 'old' - which I stress is not the same as saying that is wrong, but it is different, very different, and that is part of the difficulty of adjusting to their new lives.

'The islanders' suggests black and white films of comedy Scots on remote Hebridean rocks.
As Maggie states, Bute is a holiday island and is a stone's throw from the mainland. Maybe not exactly Majorca but it does have the benefit of the Gulf Stream warming the passing waters and the dropping of barrel bombs is vanishingly rare.
If I was to guess, Disgruntled of Syria wants the bright lights, big city life that his fellow 'refugees' have been texting him about.

A young(ish) family who want to find work are placed on Bute and some of you think that they are being ungrateful.
I doubt that.
Learn English you say? Where are the ESOL schools on Bute?
Get a job you say? Where are the jobs on Bute?
Was this a wise placement? I don't think so, and I don't think they are being ungrateful for being honest about wanting to contribute but not given the means to do so.

These Syrians have escaped all the so called tragedies of war they claim to have experienced. The lives of their families have been spared from barrel bombs and ISIS. They have been offered a new life and the first thing they unpack is their attitude."We want this.We want that"
They want to learn gratitude!! I note they would rather go to the cities like Birmingham and London,"where they have Arab friends".
So they can disappear into their enclaves/ghettoes and make no attempt to integrate with their host country like the rest of our failed multi cultural experiment.

HA! Douglas, not so! It's horses for courses :)
Retrocop, your all encompassing distrust of anyone remotely Arabian is, let's say, disturbing to me for an ex-policeman.
Did you read the link? They want a job and friends for their kids.
I didn't see anything in there about joining their ISIS fulled allies, which is apparently what you think all refugees want to do.
I'm sure they are grateful to be safe, who wouldn't be, but what happens next? They have 30 more working years left in them and want to put it to use.

My previous occupation has nothing to do with what I feel about anyone who shows ingratitude to the country in which I was born and the generosity afforded to guests. These people have been rescued from THEIR country whilst it is in a civil war. Why should they assume they have a right to permanent residency in the UK once that war has finished and maybe,a peaceful settlement is resolved. They have already determined this is the place they want to be and have disowned their own country.
That is not how it should work as much as they would like it to.
They have been sheltered so long as it takes but they should not thing they have an entitlement to permanently reside here.
If they are Syrians then they should be looking forward to returning to their own home country and help rebuild it if and when hostilities cease. Unless of course they are **** scared to return for some treacherous deeds committed and are persona non grata .

If they showed that kind of biased attitude Retro, then yes, I would say that to the serving police officers in Germany, because they would be exacerbating the problem, not helping to solve it.
No one said anything about taking up residence. I said they want to work and for their kids to have friends. Take whatever you will from that.
I am no apologist for what is happening in the name of stupid (swear word) religion right now, but I am a bit concerned about the ever more rabid witch hunts and generalisations that are going on as a backlash.
Something is very wrong with that in my mind's eye and does nothing to help. The way to radicalise people is to isolate them, so carry on and you'll have a self-fulfilling prophecy. That seems obvious to me. Shall I start munching the lentils now?

ummmm
How would I know that. I assume it s part of a journalists job to investigate.
The same paper wrote two articles concerning Bute and covered both sides of the coin.

Thanks for your unsolicted tips on the needs and requirements of serving and former police officers which are totally irrelevant to this OP and off track.
Sorry but as I was tasked to protect various principles of many differing nationalities I was trained, especially in times like this,to be observant, cautious and suspicious.Essential qualities to protect and keep people alive.
On the wider picture, because the government has little else to suggest except 'run and hide' they also suggest that YOU and everyone else remain alert. That does involve 'suspicion'.
You may choose to bumble along and ignore that advice at your peril and the innocent people around you.
As for you munching lentils I care not what you eat but perhaps they go well with a helping of naievety.
I am off out for the day to enjoy the sun. Be careful out there.
