I used to have a golly, I loved it. I have never thought they were racist.

I have never considered Gollies to be racist and I stick by that. I loved my Golly and I have a book by Enid Blyton in which Golly is the hero - he is picked on by the other toys and rolls in flour to make himself white. The little girl who owns all the toys is horrified and says that she loves her golly as he is, cleans him off, and he gets the prized position of being the toy she takes to bed with her - to the chagrin of the 'white' toys.
I also remember Golly being the hero in another story, something about rescuing another toy from a burning cottage. I will never, ever, regard a golly as racist.

It depends on what the Gollies are used for and how they are used.

Running down the street shouting 'all golliewogs should be sent home' could be perceived as racist.

The W word has been used in a negative manner towards those of different colours as has golliewog.

So yes I am one that still think that gollies could be racist!

I would say that if used to describe a person then it is racist, if used to describe a doll then not.

I loved my golly as a kid, also loved the black baby doll I also had, and the white and pink ones too. I did have a black bro and sister (adopted) and never acquainted the two. Colour just wasn't an issue!

Clearly many do find it offensive and that's why we don't see them or say it anymore - however these are adult opinions - I had one as a child, I made no connection with the meaning of the last 3 letters and I made no connection with it representing a human being, it was just a stuffed toy. I expect that was the same for most kids.
