I know a lot of people in this country that view addicts as scum as well but prefer that we just lock them up in jail instead of funding adequate treatment for what is essentialy a medical condition, not a criminal one.

Nailit....the issue of drug addiction is indeed a medical issue, but as long as its not recognised as such, the situation will just get worse.

Sadly Mikey, its not just Duterte's ignorance. Peoples attitude toward addiction in this country leave a lot to be desired. In my home city of Stoke on Trent there have been cuts to addiction services leaving people without much needed help and addiction often goes hand in hand with mental health issues (and mental health services have also been cut) Both addiction and mental health issues can affect anyone of us.

As everyone on this site knows, Im an ex con and the vast majority of prisoners have addiction issues. Ive always failed to see how criminalising and imprisoning addicts helps anyone.

Problem is that he was basically *elected* based on this promise. Not these words exactly, but in campaigning he was pledging to have something like 100,000 drug addicts, drug users and/ or drug dealers killed in the first six months of his term of office.

The language is shocking and unacceptable now. It was then. But it worked. Absolutely staggering.

You would have to be an complete idiot not to know that cocaine and heroin are highly addictive, and anybody starting to take those type of drugs must be aware of the severe dangers of so doing.
