....on grounds of anti semitism...

one of the factors in this call is her questioning of why world holocaust day isn't more wide ranging. whilst such a move - if made - would probably dilute the original meaning of the memorial, times change, definitions change; would it be so wrong to commemorate the victims of all genocide - and include Darfur, Rwanda, Srebrenica, etc - rather than just the one event, awful though it was?

The UK Holocaust memorial day is in fact also a remembrance of other genocide events such as Dafur and Rwanda.

// Holocaust Memorial Day (HMD) (27 January) is a national commemoration day in the United Kingdom dedicated to the remembrance of those who suffered in The Holocaust, under Nazi Persecution, and in subsequent genocides in Cambodia, Rwanda, Bosnia and Darfur. It was first held in January 2001 and has been on the same date every year since. The chosen date is the anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz concentration camp by the Soviet Union in 1945, the date also chosen for the International Holocaust Remembrance Day and some other national Holocaust Memorial Days. //

She seems to understand the Memorial day much better than those calling for her resignation. To call for her sacking be ause she says Dafur should also be remembered is absolutely not anti-semitic. Unless the UK Holocaust Day is anti-semitic.
It wouldn’t be wrong to commemorate other atrocities – all utterly appalling – and if that’s an understatement it’s only because words cannot suffice - but it would be wrong to group them together with the Holocaust, surely the darkest day the ‘civilised’ world has known?
There are still some vocal haolocaust deniers. By trying to water down the day to include other atrocities could be seen as another attempt to lessen the importance of the haolocaust. Urgomitmismanti-semantic.

The trouble with attempting to be 'oh so right on pc' is that real discrimination and bigotry can be missed in the clamour to be 'progressive' and the effort to teach us bigoted, closed minded racists what we should be thinking and doing.

The Corbynites rather than being a socialist party they are a party of division, bigotry and hatred dressed up in sudo care for all. They cannot even see the double standards and hypocrisy in Corbyns speech. That should tell us a lot about their mental capacity.

Unless we are going to have a Cambodia Memorial Day, and Rwanda Memorial Day, it seems fitting to remember the suffering inflicted on humanity on one day the remembers them all.
Gromit, I read what you said. Nevertheless, I do think the Holocaust was disgustingly 'unique'. My post at 07:51 stands.
If we are just number crunching, then 5 million jewish people murdered does trump 1.7million Cambodians. If only more Cambodians had died, then they could have their own day, and not be forgotten.
I'm not number crunching.
So why aren't 1.7 million Cambodians worth remembering?
Even if it is half-heartedly lumped onto another commemoration day?
Forget numbers of victims. That is just smoke and mirrors to the issue of was it right to say change the day to include all haolocaust victims.

On the one hand I think it is right. As we now remember all our war dead and the sacrifices made in conflict we should remember all those that have died by the hands of tyrants and megalomaniacs etc.

But to say that now when anti semiteism is a sensitive topic, especially within the Labour Party is stupid and I'll considered in the extreme.

As I said earlier, they want to be seen as all careing but are just thoughtless and clueless to not consider how they will be perceived. But I suppose that is the way to go when you want to force people to do what you want. Ignore the niceties and ram pack you jargon with emotional blackmail be implying you are not nice to agree with them.
Gromit, I didn’t say they weren’t worth remembering – simply that the Holocaust, having been the work of a supposedly civilised western nation during a war that affected the whole of Europe – and more - among all the atrocities committed in the world, stands alone.
Holocaust Memorial Day UK includes commemorating Cambodia, Dafur, Bosnia and Rwanda.
If that is anti-semitic perhaps the Trust Patron should resign. That would be HRH Prince Charles. And other Trustees such as the President of British Jews, and the MP for Golders Green should also be resigned.
Gromit, I haven’t said she’s anti-Semitic. She appears to be one of the few who understands the difference between anti-Semitism and anti-Zionism.

so it might. but Ms Walker's comments - and my question - refer not to the uk, but WORLD holocaust day.
More proof if it were needed of the anti antisemitism of the left.
Mush,
Uk Holocaust day is part of World Holocaust day.

// HMD has taken place in the UK since 2001, with a UK event and over 5,590 local activities taking place on or around 27 January each year.

The UK played a leading role in establishing HMD as an international day of commemoration in 2000, when 46 governments signed the Stockholm Declaration.

The UK Government had responsibility for running HMD from 2001-2005, organised through the Home Office.

In May 2005 HMDT was registered as a charity (charity no: 1109348) and the Home Secretary appointed HMDT Trustees for the first time. The professional team started work in October 2005. //

Just a small point, but if Holocaust day does already commemorate other genocides she seems to be unaware of the fact. Which isn't great and suggest a certain ignorance of the subject

// "and in terms of Holocaust day wouldn't it be wonderful if Holocaust day was open to all people who experienced holocaust in practice it's not actually circulated and advertised as such." //

She knows. It was her audience who were ignorant that it didn't just commemorate victims of the Nazis. They thought the day belonged to them and were not happy when she pointed out that it is a shared day.
There's a Holocaust Memorial Day ?
Well I suppose there are only 365¼ days in a year so every day must be dozens of special days, most of which hasn't hit my consciousness.
"She knows. It was her audience who were ignorant that it didn't just commemorate victims of the Nazis. They thought the day belonged to them and were not happy when she pointed out that it is a shared day."

That is a complete reversal of the events... Jackie Walker was questioning why Holocaust Memorial Day could not be opened to all people (i.e. more than Jews) and the audience responded that it already is.

To my mind anti-Zionism isn't really anything to boast about.
Effectively it means wanting the state of Israel not to exist, which strikes me as poor, as ideologies go
