You will never get that message through to TTT, Anne, I'm afraid. I've been telling him literally for years that a desire to be free of English political dominance within the UK is not at all the same as a hatred of the English themselves.
He himself, as a strong Brexiter, was desperate to be free of the political dominance of the European Union, but I don't suppose for even a moment that he actually hates Swedes, Poles or Slovenians.
I'm Scottish and have lived and worked in England for several decades; I have an English wife, one of my children was born here, most of my current friends are English...I could go on, but the point is that I have not a shred of animosity towards the English. I like them...including TTT...and I do not personally know a single Jock who feels any different from myself. (Yes, there may well be such people about, just as there are English people who dislike Scots...several of them right here on AB...but neither of these groups is representative of their nations.)
Nor does TTT understand that the Scots do not see membership of the EU as being under a yoke of dominance; indeed, they voted 62%/38% in favour of remaining part of that union. Despite that, they are likely to be forced out of it because that's what ENGLAND voted for.
It is because of this sort of thing that many Scots would, indeed, like to get out from under such English influence and leaving the UK is clearly the only possible way to achieve that end. As part of the UK, it is never going to happen, we know that since the English form the vast bulk of the electorate.
We don't see the English as "the auld enemy", but just as the "bulk" that overhangs us. (By 'us', of course, I mean the Scots who do actually want independence and I certainly appreciate that we are still a minority - but a significant one - in Scotland. I remain convinced that, dv, it will come one probably not-too-distant day.
