Since no one here on AB amazingly hasn't (after all it is ALL over the News) mentioned the major earthquake in south Asia - I would like to take this opportunity to be the first to share my sorrow and grief for those who have lost their lives and for those whom have been affected by this tragic event in any way.

yes i agree, a truly tragic situation there, its horrifying. My thoughts and prayers are with them all. x
I was thinking the same thing masel *ALFIE* and I've made a donation through the DEC website www.dec.org.uk
yes, this has been in the papers of course, but it hasn't received the sort of huge coverage of, say Hurricane Katrina, though the death toll is far, far higher. I suppose the thinking is that New Orleans is somehow better known to Britain than Islamabad - though I suspect that this is not true. It seems horrifying; but perhaps in a year that has featured tsunamis and hurricanes, people are just exhausted with bad news. My heart goes out to all those afflicted - apparently more than 2 million are now homeless, quite apart from the dead, so suffering must be very widespread.

I agree with the above sentiments of sympathy - a tragic event.

My guess at the reason why a special pst hasn't gone up before, and why perhaps this would be better in ChatterBank, is that there's nothing to debate, and no answer to a question.  That of course doesn't mean that the subject is any less worthy of a mention, it just means people might feel less compelled to start a thread about it.  I don't mean any offence by that, and it's nice that someone started one - it's just that the people who didn't, are not by default heartless bar stewards!

Well put jan-bug, I'm sure that everyone here feels a huge amount of sympathy for all those involved and no doubt most of us will donate to the various charities without even having to think twice!

Agreed another terrible natural disaster.

And the pakistan authorities seem to have reacted quickly and promptly as can be expected in the circumstances..which should be commended.

Sadly and typically there are the usual sections of the media sniping about should have been quicker, they should have done this blah blah blah..the british government should be doing more, if this had been a non muslim country etc.. this only happened saturday morning for gods sake, massive aid relief consumes time and organisation, it can't be done to please news deadlines and agendas...perhaps we should let these media experts take charge of the relief effort..

Sad is'nt it how some sections of the media just can't seem to help themselves!  I personally thought that some relief was getting through pretty quickly - especially when you compare it to Hurricane Katrina!!
